Pray that another may arise in peace; I myself cannot eat meat. From the beginning, only you have known this. The prince said: Did I not say to you, how could you bestow the holy gift? If you do not renounce eating meat, how can you truly speak while refraining from killing beings? In this way, the three previous holy ones also gave. By giving up your life, you accomplish the fourth holy giving, and so it became. The rakshasa said: For this reason I lost the kingdom, suffered in the forest, damaged the Dharma, and gained an evil reputation—all this I myself caused. The prince said: Because of you, Dharma and worldly affairs, happiness and fame, all decline. The source that causes beings to become impoverished—how can that be proper? This is not reasonable. By this admonition, the rakshasa prince bowed and accepted the vow not to eat meat, and also released the prisoners. Then Prince Moon went before the prisoners, who rejoiced greatly, thinking, “We are liberated!” They further vowed that the rakshasa would not harm, and the prisoners were freed. The rakshasa was escorted with the five hundred princes, who established governance based on Dharma. The princes each ruled their realms. That Prince Moon was the Blessed One himself; the rakshasa became later the monk Sormo. Thus, whenever one encounters noble beings, great virtue arises. Following the words of the noble ones, practicing accordingly, skillfully accomplishing the benefit of self and others, enduring even great hardship without retreating from the Dharma path. Relying upon the Dharma, one achieves vast benefit for self and others. Thinking in this way, one reveres the qualities of the Dharma. Long ago, in the city of Varanasi, there was a king named Śibi (Tsang-sbyin), who ruled the realm, making the land prosperous and peaceful.

At that time, during a public ceremony, the Brahmin’s son named Janggu (ལྗང་གུ་) had reached the far shore of the eight states of wisdom. He possessed deep faith and virtuous thoughts, was devoted to benefiting both himself and others, full of compassion, and dutiful to his parents. The Blessed One declared that he had become a bodhisattva. The aged parents of Brahmin Janggu, whose eyesight had grown dim and whose legs could no longer support them, petitioned King Tsangjin (ཚངས་སྦྱིན་) to allow their son to serve them, saying: “We wish to go to the ‘Forest of Great Trials’ (meaning the forest of austerities).” The king said to Janggu, “You should serve in office.” But Janggu replied, “I do not wish to serve in office. I wish instead to serve those who are old, frail, and powerless.” So he refused public service, cast aside worldly life as one might sweep away dust from a house, and went with his parents to dwell in the forest. There, each morning, he rose to wash and attend to his parents with pure water, then offered fire sacrifices. Afterwards, he would gather fruits, roots, and fresh water, present them to his parents, and spend the rest of the time absorbed in one-pointed meditation — thus passing his days. One day, after bowing to his parents, he dreamt that a black serpent devoured his body and that black ropes bound him and dragged him southward. He saw terrifying visions of the path of ruin and fear arose in his heart. He thought, “I cannot bear the suffering of being separated from my teacher.” At that moment, his parents, sighing, gazed at the sun, offered sincere prayers, and went to fetch water carrying a vessel. Meanwhile, King Tsangjin entered the Forest of Great Trials with his hunting dogs. Though he did not see anyone’s form, he heard a sound like that of a wild beast. Drawing his bow, he shot an arrow which pierced Janggu’s heart. Janggu fell to the ground, overcome by intense pain, yet still thinking for the sake of his parents: “May the suffering caused by this single arrow, I myself and…”

Having lost their faculties, the father and likewise the pure mother, We three beings were killed. When the king heard this, he asked: How can one arrow kill three beings? Then, Ljang-gu, weeping with compassion, said: I am more wretched than most, My parents have also become blind, I too have been struck by an arrow, Thus, three beings will die. Then the king, frightened and terrified, said: Brahmin boy, I have committed a wrong, Unknowingly, I shot an arrow, Do not let me be cursed, it is proper to pray to the parents. Then Ljang-gu respectfully allows the king to breathe. Great king, if you have power over me and those close to me, please be compassionate, Loving to beings, Looking to the next world, do not be daunted by curses. Again he said: My father, the lama, please smell this pellet, This is the last of the water for washing their feet. With my words, please touch their feet, And say: It will not be long before we part. Then the king himself took the pellet and went into the forest, At that time, non-humans in the four directions were in great turmoil. Then the two blind people said to each other: Ljang-gu has been at the seaside for a long time. His mother said: Now my Ljang-gu, In the lake filled with lotuses and utpalas, When the geese make sounds, He plays together with the wild animals. Then the king went to them, From the sound of footsteps, those ascetics said: Beloved and pleasing to see, Why does Ljang-gu enter? Parents are weak and hungry, Why torment the wretched? The king, displeased, said with a compassionate cry: I am not Ljang-gu, but King Tsang-sbyin. The parents said: Welcome, are you well? Please sit here, Ljang-gu is going to the hermitage with water and fruit. The lord of men, called Ljang-gu, Possesses virtues, is naturally loving, By the power of his love, Here dwell wild animals and birds. Then the king touched the feet of the ascetics, shedding tears and speaking with a trembling voice: Ljang
