When mindfulness arose, he rebuked his own mind thus: 'From beginningless time, you have been unable, so that you have suffered in the three realms of samsara and have not become an accumulation of merit. Now is the time to begin diligence, not the time to be lazy,' he scolded. After making effort, he entered the execution ground, thinking, 'Now it is good,' and a great joy arose in his mind. At that time, the earth and sky shook in six ways, and the gods of the form realm and below gathered in the sky above, and seeing the Bodhisattva practicing austerities for the sake of the Dharma without regard for his life, tears fell like rain, and a rain of divine flowers fell. Then Indra transformed into his own body and asked as before, 'For what kind of thing are you doing this? Do you have no regrets?' The king, with a true speech of no regret, made his body even better than before. Furthermore, in the past, when the king was named Shibi, he gave to sentient beings whatever they desired, and especially cherished the sick. At that time, a weak patient who had been abandoned by all the doctors went to the king and asked the divine physician to examine him. The king summoned the doctors to treat the patient, and they said, 'The medicine for this disease is very difficult to find. It is necessary to make wheat porridge from the blood of someone who has never been angry since birth and feed it for six months in order to live.' Then the king thought, 'This medicine is very rare, could such a person be me?' So he asked his mother, 'Have I ever been angry with anyone before?' The mother said, 'Since you came into my arms, I have never been angry with anyone, let alone you.' Then he went to his mother and asked in the same way, and she replied, 'Since you entered my womb, I have never been angry, let alone you.' Then he thought that he had found the medicine and said to the doctors, 'Draw blood from my body to heal the patient!' They were unable to do so, and the king himself cut his veins, filled a container with the blood, and mixed it with wheat porridge every day for six months. All the king's loving retinue wept, and those who came from various places also felt that it was too rare to do this for one person.

They mocked and gossiped, saying that this was abandoning sentient beings. As a result, that patient was cured. At that time, the body of that king became full of holes like a sieve, and his splendor diminished, but the gods infused splendor and allowed him to survive. When that person recovered from his illness, the king gave him five of the best towns and honored him as the leader of the region. Those who were amazed said to that person, "Is it true that King Shibi made offerings for you?" That person said, "What did he do for me? Whether the foul blood is spilled on the ground or given to others, what is so amazing?" As soon as he said this, his house caught fire and everything was burned down. Then, the son of King Shibi became a young man, but one half of his body became withered. The doctors said to the young man's father, the king, "If you soak all the essence of the flesh of the Shangshang bird in butter and give it to him, he will live." Although all the essence was gathered, the flesh of the Shangshang bird was not found for twelve years. The doctors instructed those who were doing the work: "Take a mirror and a crow to the seashore, insert a stake there, and place the mirror in front of the crow. When the crow sees its own image, thinking 'This is a crow,' it will make a sound. When the Shangshang bird hears the crow's call, it will come to it, and that is the way to catch it." They did as they were told and caught a Shangshang bird. Not long after the world was formed, the natural order allowed animals to speak human language, so that Shangshang bird said, "Where are you taking me?" Those people told the story of what had happened. The Shangshang bird said, "Let me go, let me go! I will tell you about the medicine and jewels that can make the flesh strong." Those people said, "Let us see what your medicine is like." The Shangshang bird said, "The water I bathed in has the power of flesh, take it and go! These are the jewels." Although it indicated this, the king, out of fear, threw away the jewels, took the Shangshang bird and offered it to the king, and truthfully told everything that had happened. The king asked the Shangshang bird, and the Shangshang bird said, "O god, the water I bathed in makes the flesh strong." Then, the king filled seven containers with good water.
