Those Pratyekabuddhas said: O long-lived one, go to the countryside, seek a doctor, and you will be healed. He said: The Dharma that many people do not want and do not like, and the Dharma common to all sentient beings, which is called death, if it comes and carries me away with illness, why should I go to the city? They said: Even so, however, a virtuous person, as long as he lives, accumulates merit, and as much merit as he accumulates, he will be happy in the heavens. Having encouraged him in this way, they descended to the countryside and gradually arrived at the palace of the king of the Shibi kingdom, and said to the doctor: Show me a medicine that is beneficial for this disease. The doctor said: O noble one, your disease is the same as the disease of the king's son. All the essence of twelve years has been stored in butter and boiled food, so go and ask for it. If you get it, you will live. At the gate of that royal palace, if people came to beg, a bell would be hung for the sake of giving. The story of the king's son named Benefiting Others, is also similar to this, but there are also some slight differences. ༈ In the past, in Varanasi, there was a king named Brahma-giving, that compassionate king, after hearing rumors that five hundred ministers were each speaking ill of the king, the king thought, what if I kill them, but out of compassion did not kill them, but expelled them from the country and sent them to a sandbar. They were in danger of thirst, but could not find water, so they cried out. At that time, the Blessed One himself transformed into a supreme bodhisattva elephant, saw them, filled his trunk with water and ran over, rinsed the mouths of those ministers, had them ride on his back, and transported them to a mountain valley, satisfying them with flowing water, fruits, and roots, and then said: Beyond this mountain there is the corpse of a chief elephant. Wash its intestines, fill them with water, collect roots and fruits, and then set off, and in that way you will be able to cross this wilderness. Having said that, that elephant climbed that mountain, and said: Just as I have shown the way to save these wretched ones and have given up my life, may I, upon becoming a buddha, also liberate them from the wilderness of samsara. Having said that, he jumped off that mountain and died. The ministers searched and found it, saying: If the elephant who gave us life yesterday is this one, then if we put our hands on it, why don't our hands fall to the ground? At that time, the gods of the Pure Abodes said: May the wish in the mind of this great being, for whom he gave up his life, be completely fulfilled! After that, they washed the elephant's intestines, filled them with water, and carried the roots and fruits. They made offerings to the elephant's corpse.
