From the cave, this great being vowed to liberate us from samsara when he attained Buddhahood. Then, in the past, in the city of Varanasi, this Bhagavan took birth as King Padma, lovingly nurturing all sentient beings like an only child, and engaging in generosity and great generosity. At that time, due to imbalanced seasons, a great plague occurred, and sentient beings were afflicted with leprosy. The king, generating compassion, gathered all the doctors and treated them with medicine, but for a long time, he was unable to cure those sentient beings. The doctors said, "There is one medicine, if we can find a fish called Rohita fish, we can cure them, otherwise nothing can cure them." The king searched everywhere for Rohita fish, but could not find it. Later, when the king went out for a walk, those patients gathered and said to the king, "Please save us from this disease and grant us life." The king, generating compassion for them, shedding tears, said, "If I cannot pacify the suffering of others tormented by pain, then what is the use of life and the power of the kingdom?" So, he gave away a lot of wealth, installed his eldest son as king, confessed his sins to relatives and people, praised the people and ministers of the palace with joyful words, comforted the suffering patients, stayed in the eight-limbed vows, went to the top of the palace, scattered flowers and incense, etc., and faced east and made a vow: "With the truth and true words, seeing the extremely poor sentient beings tormented by disease, I give up my life, may I be born as a Rohita fish in this river that swallows rivers!" After saying that, he jumped from the top of the palace. At the moment he fell, he died and was born as a Rohita fish in the river that swallows rivers. Then, the gods proclaimed everywhere, "The Rohita fish is born in the river that swallows rivers, it is like nectar for those who have been tormented by serious diseases for a long time!" As soon as the people heard this news, they immediately took up weapons and knives and began to cut the flesh of that live fish. Bodhisattva

འ་ 这样断自身体的时候，慈爱遍布那些有情，脸上流下温暖的眼泪，心想我以血肉使这些有情安乐，真是得到了最好的收获啊。就这样十二年间，以自己的血肉使那些有情满足，也不从无上圆满菩提退转。当所有有情疾病痊愈的时候，那条鱼罗希达宣说：‘喂，有情们，你们听着！我就是名叫莲花的国王，我为了你们的利益，舍弃了自己的生命，获得了这样的身体。你们让我心里高兴吧！当我获得无上圆满菩提的时候，也要让你们永远从疾病中解脱，安置于超越痛苦的究竟成就和安乐之中。’这样说道。听到这些话后，那些民众以及国王大臣眷属们用鲜花等供养，并发愿说：‘您做如此艰难之事，当您成佛的时候，我们成为您的声闻弟子吧！’这样发愿。༈ 又在过去的时候，世尊自己变成瓦拉纳西城的国王名叫梵天施，如法治理国家，富裕安乐，没有疾病、饥荒、内乱等。那位国王也喜好佛法，慈悲心大，安住于布施。在那里，后来一个时期，如同中间的劫难一样，发生了大饥荒，人们变得像饿鬼一样，向国王求救。国王衡量了仓库里有什么样的 食物，让精于计算的人计算后，让所有的人每天吃一口，国王自己吃两口。在那里，来了一个不在计算之内的婆罗门，国王把自己两口食物中的一口给了他，让国王和所有国民每天吃一口。那时，天界的自在天心想，要考验一下这位如此行持难行的国王，于是化作婆罗门的模样，当他来到门口的时候，对国王说：‘请您把您仅有的一口食物赐予我吧！’国王舍弃了自己的生命，把仅有的一口食物给了婆罗门，就这样一天。

Ah, while cutting his own body in this way, he spread loving-kindness to those sentient beings, warm tears streaming down his face, thinking, 'I am making these sentient beings happy with my flesh and blood, truly I have obtained the best gain.' In this way, for twelve years, he satisfied those sentient beings with his own flesh and blood, and did not turn back from unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. When all those sentient beings were healed of their diseases, that fish Rohita proclaimed: 'Hey, sentient beings, listen! I am the king named Lotus, and for your benefit, I have given up my life and obtained such a body. Make me happy! When I attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, I will also liberate you forever from diseases, and establish you in the ultimate accomplishment and happiness beyond suffering.' Thus he spoke. Having heard these words, those crowds of people and the king's ministers and retinue made offerings with flowers and so on, and made the aspiration: 'You who do such difficult deeds, when you become enlightened, may we become your Shravaka disciples!' Thus they made the aspiration. ༈ Again, in the past, the Blessed One himself became a king named Brahma-given in the city of Varanasi, ruling the kingdom according to Dharma, prosperous and happy, without disease, famine, internal strife, and so on. That king also loved the Dharma, had great compassion, and dwelt in generosity. There, at a later time, like an intermediate kalpa, a great famine occurred, and the people became like hungry ghosts, seeking refuge from the king. The king measured what kind of food and drink there was in the treasury, and had it calculated by skilled accountants. He then had all the people eat one mouthful each day, and the king himself ate two mouthfuls. There, a Brahmin who was not included in the calculations arrived, and the king gave him one of his two mouthfuls, so that the king and all the people of the country ate one mouthful each day. At that time, the Lord of the Gods thought, 'I must test this king who is doing such difficult deeds,' and so he transformed himself into the form of a Brahmin. When he arrived at the door, he said to the king, 'Please grant me that one mouthful of food that you have!' The king gave up his own life and gave the one mouthful of food to the Brahmin, and so it was for one day.
