It saw that one fawn had not crossed, and even while feeling the pain of broken joints, it carried the fawn on its back, crossed the river, attained unsurpassed enlightenment, and made the aspiration to liberate all beings from samsara, and then ended its life. The herd at that time were the giants of Grass City (present-day Allahabad, India), and that fawn was the Parivrājaka Subhadra. ༈ Again, in the past, in Varanasi, a king named Brahmadatta ruled the kingdom according to dharma. His horse Candaka died. A minor king of the Kham region heard that Candaka had died, and sent a messenger saying, "Either give taxes, or pay the city gate fee, otherwise, you must be tied by the neck and brought here." But he neither gave taxes nor paid the city gate fee, but was searching for the horse Candaka, and having found it, in the spring when the flowers were blooming, he went to the forest, and before he had returned to the city, the minor king of the Kham region heard about this, and four divisions of troops came. King Brahmadatta rode the horse Candaka and waged war with the four divisions of troops. Another minor king stabbed the horse Candaka in the buttocks with a spear, and it endured the pain of its intestines falling out and its bones breaking, thinking, 'In order not to put the king in distress, I must get him to the city as soon as possible.' So, it stepped on the flowers of the Brahmadatta pond, which was full of various flowers, and allowed the king to escape back to his own country, and that horse ended its life. The king thought, 'My savior is the horse Candaka, I should give it half of the kingdom, but now it is too late, and even if it weren't too late, what use would it be to give it?' 在（过去）身为拥有五百大象的国王时，变成了一只美丽可爱的大象。当这些大象夜间停留在一个危险狭窄的单行道上时，被五个猎人看到，他们立即在那条危险的道路上挖掘了一个巨大的陷阱。心想：把这些大象都弄到陷阱里去，我们就可以随意取用了。于是他们把大象们赶到那里，当赶到有陷阱的地方时，大象们发现了陷阱无法通过。象王便将自己的身体横卧在陷阱之上，当作桥梁，让五百只大象踩着它的背通过。之后，它自己也跳跃着越过了陷阱。众神说道：恶人虽挖深陷阱，然象王具慧于此间，自他二利勤兼顾，徒劳恶人挖深坑。如是说。又，（过去）身为神骏马王，使落入罗刹洲的商人们，安然返回赡部洲。又，（过去）身为狮子鬃毛者时，五百位志同道合者被恶魔所包围，不顾自身性命，使他们得以解脱。又，（过去）身为商主名为财车时，慈悲五百商人，为了他们的利益，与他们一同乘船，遇到了猛烈的风暴，船只即将沉没。商主说：大家不要害怕！船若沉没，你们抓住我，我将带你们渡过难关。于是将大量的珍宝夹在腋下，当船沉没时，他们都抓住了商主。商主奋力游渡，疲惫不堪，仅剩一丝气息时，到达了海边。商主便断气身亡。众人将尸体捞起晒干，在腋下发现了大量的珍宝，于是带着珍宝返回家乡，变得富裕起来。又，（过去）身为商主名为一切救时，在荒无人烟的地方，由于缺水，为了拯救五百名疲惫的商人，以及特别困苦的五名商人，以真实语祈请诸神。自在天大

When these elephants stayed at night on a dangerous and narrow one-way road, they were seen by five hunters, who immediately dug a huge trap on that dangerous road. So they drove the elephants there, and when they drove to the place with the trap, the elephants found the trap and could not pass. The elephant king lay his body across the trap, acting as a bridge, and let five hundred elephants step on his back and pass. After that, he himself jumped and crossed the trap. The gods said: Although the wicked dig deep traps, the elephant king is wise in this, taking care of both self and others, the wicked dig deep pits in vain. So it is said. Also, (in the past) as the divine horse king, he safely returned the merchants who had fallen into the Rakshasa continent to Jambudvipa. Also, (in the past) when he was a lion with a mane, five hundred like-minded people were surrounded by demons, and he disregarded his own life and saved them. Also, (in the past) when he was a merchant named Treasure Cart, he was compassionate to five hundred merchants, and for their benefit, he boarded a boat with them, and encountered a violent storm, and the boat was about to sink. The merchant said: Don't be afraid! If the boat sinks, you grab me, and I will take you across. So he put a lot of treasures under his armpits, and when the boat sank, they all grabbed the merchant. The merchant swam hard, exhausted, and with only a trace of breath left, he reached the seashore. The merchant died. The people picked up the corpse and dried it, and found a lot of treasures under the armpits, so they took the treasures back to their hometown and became rich. Also, (in the past) when he was a merchant named All-Savior, in a deserted place, due to lack of water, in order to save five hundred tired merchants, and five particularly distressed merchants, he prayed to the gods with true words.
