过了一会儿,说法者说了这首偈颂:积累福德能得乐,因此人应行福德,此事应再三行,应于此事生 desire(藏文:འདུན་པར་བྱ།,梵文天城体:अभिलाषं कुरु,梵文罗马拟音:abhilāṣaṃ kuru,汉语字面意思:生起欲望)。

Saying, "This is the worst, the most unbearable," he sighed. Now he put on his two shoes, took the five robes and the umbrella, and left the gambling place. Eventually, he happily went to the place where the Dharma was being taught. He thought, "Let me listen for a while to what is being taught." He put down the umbrella and shoes and listened respectfully. After a while, the Dharma speaker recited this verse: Accumulating merit leads to happiness. Therefore, people should perform meritorious deeds. This should be done again and again. One should desire(藏文:འདུན་པར་བྱ།,梵文天城体:अभिलाषं कुरु,梵文罗马拟音:abhilāṣaṃ kuru,汉语字面意思:生起欲望) it. After hearing this verse, he thought, "Accumulating merit leads to happiness, that's right. My extreme poverty is also because I haven't done meritorious deeds. I should do some meritorious deeds." He thought, "What do I have?" He saw that other than the two coarse cloths, the umbrella, the shoes, and the remaining buttons of the five robes, everything else had been lost in gambling. He thought, "If I give away the five robes and the monastic cloth, I will starve to death. If I don't give them away, I will go to the next world without merit, and there I will also suffer the pain of poverty. So, what method is there to avoid both starving to death and being without merit?" He thought again, "Even if I die of starvation, it's easy. Going to the next world without merit is not the way to go." He thought, "I must give away the five robes and the monastic cloth." As he was thinking this, the Dharma speaker recited this verse again: Delaying merit leads to delight in evil. Therefore, quickly do good, and turn your mind away from evil. He said this. Hearing these words, he thought, "Since it is said to quickly do good, I should give immediately." So, he held the umbrella over the Dharma speaker who was sitting on the lion throne, placed the two shoes at his feet, scattered the buttons of the five robes on his feet, took off the monastic cloth and covered the Dharma speaker's feet. He generated faith and awe, prostrated at his feet, and with strong faith made this aspiration: "By this root of virtue, bodhicitta, and giving for the sake of the Dharma, may I never be poor from this life onwards. May I be known as great in merit in all lifetimes, and may the gods and humans enthrone me as king. May all that I think and desire be accomplished from the sky, and may I...

Moreover, it was also heard that wonderful and amazing things would happen, such as the appearance of inexhaustible treasures filled with various jewels. Therefore, the preacher also recited the scriptures and completely dedicated them to all the retinue. The gambler, wearing only a single cloth, thought about the act of giving and returned to his home. When his wife and son saw him, they thought, "This man has lost all his fine clothes and ornaments, and now he will lose both of us and leave." He felt ashamed and thought, "Because of the fault of poverty, I am being scolded like this." So he said in verse: "What suffering is the most painful? Poverty is suffering. What is the most painful? It is poverty itself. The poor are like the dead. I do not choose death because of poverty." After speaking, he sighed and sat without saying a word. Then, there was a well in the courtyard of that house. The wife tied a bucket with a rope and lowered it, intending to draw water. However, she could not lift the bucket, so she called her husband, "Husband, please come and help lift the bucket." The two of them could not lift it either, so they called their son. All three of them exerted great effort, to the point of tearing their skin and flesh, and finally managed to lift the bucket. When they looked at the bucket, they saw five copper pots filled with gold and silver hanging below it. The gambler, seeing the result of his generosity in this life, was overjoyed and said in verse, "How wonderful! I have abandoned all faults, the field of the essence of virtue. Now I have sown the seed, and now the fruit ripens." His wife asked, "Husband, what do you mean by this?" He then told her the details of what had happened. He was amazed to see the wonderful ripening of the fruit of good deeds in this life. The story spread from one person to another, reaching the king's palace and all the retinue. Many people were amazed. After that, the gambler suddenly became wealthy and saw the result of his meritorious deeds with abundant wealth. He then honored the Three Jewels with strong faith. From that day on, he began to make offerings to the stupa of the Tathagata.
