It was cherished as priceless and specially narrated because of its wonder. Those words were heard by the kings under the sun, and in order to serve and honor him, all gathered together and came with the four divisions of the army, saying: You are the great possessor of merit, please be the king, and we will serve you. The king also satisfied them with whatever precious things they desired, befitting great ones, and then placed them and their retinues on the path of the ten virtues and sent them back to their own countries. After that, King Clear Power gradually heard of this matter, first sending messengers, and then quickly coming with a great army to the presence of Merit Power, fainting with love for his son, descending from the back of an elephant with tears filling his eyes, embracing his son's neck, and after observing him for a long time, said: Young son, now understand what I say. I am old and frail and cannot bear the burden of kingship. You take on the burden of kingship, he said, and then took off the silk headdress, diadem, and arm ornaments from his own head and gave them to him. After that, King Merit Power gradually ruled over all of Jambudvipa, becoming the ruler of the power of kingship. He satisfied all the many beings living in Jambudvipa with gold and silver as they desired, and placed them on the path of the ten virtues. At that time, there was no one poor or sick in this Jambudvipa. All the people of Jambudvipa were happy, healthy, and strong, with developed senses, rich, wealthy, and enjoying great prosperity, possessing much gold and silver, storehouses, furniture, and property, living prosperously, with good harvests, without strife, thieves, or famine, without stones or gravel, etc., with flowers and fruit trees flourishing, rain falling in season, and possessing food, cattle, and buffaloes. Everything was happy and prosperous, relying on merit, always giving alms, observing fasts, and abiding by the precepts. At that time, in Jambudvipa, any beings who died from being human were separated from their bodies and were born among the gods. Most were born among the gods of the retinue of the Four Great Kings. King Merit Power also made immeasurable beings...

Accumulation of merit.

Arranged them for the benefit of this life and the next, Having passed away, together with thousands of sentient beings, they were born in the Tushita heaven. Thus, our teacher at that time became a king named Sonam Tob (Fortunate Power). The father and mother of that time were also the present-day Śuddhodana and Māyādevī. The young and handsome one was Su's son, the monk Ānanda. The diligent one was the monk Drozhin Kye (Grain Born), twenty kotis. The skillful one was the monk Ma Gagpa (Non-impeded). The wise one was the monk Śāriputra. The Indra of that time was Maudgalyāyana's son. The king who passed away and whose throne Sonam Tob ascended was the evil demon. The former poor man, the man who entered Sonam Tob's house, was the monk Rāhula. The man without hands and feet whom Sonam Tob left as before, the man who offered medicine and Dharma to the king, was this Kauṇḍinya. Therefore, in all ways, merit benefits, and I have not seen anything else that is comparable to merit. There, the monks asked the Blessed One, what deeds did King Sonam Tob do to become a king and to have all his wishes fulfilled? The Blessed One replied: In the past, in a past age, a Tathāgata named Invincible appeared in the world, performed the deeds of a Buddha, and after passing into complete nirvāṇa, a king erected a stupa of relics. At the festival of that stupa, among the hundreds of thousands of assembled retinues, a monk taught the Dharma in the afternoon. At that time, in the entourage of the king's palace, there was a gambler named Gyenpo Gyalwapo (Gambler Bankrupt), who was very addicted to gambling. He had a wife named Nampar Gyalma (Victorious Mother) and a son named Nampar Gyalwa (Victorious One). Then, that gambler, except for wearing a single cloth, an umbrella, a pair of shoes, and the five paṇḍita guests, had lost everything he owned inside and outside the house in gambling, and was suffering unbearable pain because he was very poor. Alas, because of not accumulating merit, I am poor.
