Having said "Good," he retreated to one side. The gods said, "Good, good! The vow you have made is truly firm! In this way, having made your vow, the powerful ones will cause us to fail. Merit will cause you to become the possessor of royal power." Then, King Sonam Tob, with reverence, rose from the lion throne in Lago, and treated his brothers well, seating them on thrones befitting their status, and they also expressed their respect before returning to the lion throne. Once seated, in order to assure his brothers that he had completely let go of past grievances, he made them happy, treated them with great respect, and gave them generous shares of wealth. Afterwards, one day, his brothers and many people, wanting to approach Sonam, spoke to the assembled crowd, saying, "Non-virtue leads to unbearable suffering, ultimately leading to hell. Non-virtue leads to destruction, resulting in rebirth as an unbearable animal. Non-virtue leads to suffering from hunger and thirst, ultimately leading to the realm of the hungry ghosts. Non-virtue leads to perpetual suffering, becoming a slave." And so on, through verses, it was explained that non-virtue leads to blindness, deafness, and muteness, ugliness, a rough and cracked body, lack of luster and glory, loss of senses such as sight, many illnesses, difficulty in healing, an unattractive appearance, crippled fingers, an unpleasant voice, foolishness, impaired wisdom, inner unease, wrong views, mental confusion and madness, poverty, speaking unpleasant words, slander, being scolded by everyone, being despised, low birth, being hated by all, having many enemies, even inanimate objects becoming enemies, being harmed by hungry ghosts, rakshasas, etc., beneficial medicine also becoming harmful, separation from loved ones, being accompanied by suffering, speech lacking power, wealth always being consumed by kings, fire, thieves, etc., being hired or trading for wealth, but wealth being wasted and no profit being gained, whatever is undertaken failing and not succeeding, always being filled with fear, and the land also becoming filled with stumps and thorns, and anything at all

In that dependence, whatever is displeasing, unpleasant, or unhelpful, and all such inverted falls, all these arise from not having merit. Merit will protect, merit will encourage diligence, merit will shield from heat and cold, merit will repel adverse currents and rain, by merit. Merit is the wish-fulfilling young cow, the excellent wish-fulfilling jewel depends on merit, merit is the wish-fulfilling tree, all pleasing desires ripen as fruit. By merit, one obtains fortune, merit is pleasing splendor, merit makes the mind steadfast. The meritorious are born into noble families, merit obtains fame, merit leads to great learning, vast and pleasing depends on merit, merit retains what is heard. Freedom from illness comes from merit, merit conquers the Lord of Death, even the most terrifying Lord of Death, merit makes one unafraid. Even the gods dwelling in immeasurable mansions, giving the bliss of gods, depend on merit. The Thirty-three Gods depend on merit, likewise the Gods Free from Strife through merit. The Gods of Tushita also depend on merit, as do the Gods of Delightful Transformation, the Gods Wielding Power over Desire also become the same through merit. Merit is also like the Great Brahma, the lord of billions of gods, in thousands of Brahma's worlds, one becomes the lord who can act freely. By merit, all desired, the nine perfections constantly abide, even inanimate objects, by merit, can be controlled. Thus, when speaking those captivating words that truly show this life and the next, the majority of ordinary people turned to relying on merit. Then, King Merit Power, in order to make those beings cherish merit, looked to the sky, generated the mind, and spoke these words: 'If within and without my royal palace, a rain of various jewels and a rain of clothes would fall, how wonderful would that be!' As soon as he spoke, various excellent clothes suitable for the gods, and a rain of pleasing divine flowers fell, followed by a rain of various divine jewels, covering everything and shimmering brightly. Seeing this, many
