I came out to see the places, and there I saw a man bound upside down by strong bonds, and I asked the ministers. "O god, this man does not offer to the god one-sixth of the grain and crops that people produce each year. The people of the god, who live by the edge of their karma, gather and offer, but this man does not do so." I said, "Release this man, and do not collect wealth or grain from anyone by force." They said, "O god, some people also do not offer because they are not very devoted in their hearts." Like an umbrella, the god's food and drink, etc., and the retinue of the consorts, and the enjoyment of the princes and princesses, all of which are gathered from others, what should we do?" Then I was very unhappy and thought, "I will give the power of dominion over all the land of Jambudvipa to my sons." I had five hundred sons, and I made them uphold the correct Bodhi, and divided Jambudvipa into five hundred parts and gave them to my sons. I went to the forest of asceticism, practiced the pure conduct of a hermit, and in a forest not far from the great southern ocean, I ate the roots and fruits of the forest, meditated under the Udumbara tree, and gradually attained the five superknowledges. At that time, five hundred merchants of Jambudvipa entered the great ocean and found many piles of jewels. There was a captain named Moon, a fortunate and wise man, who also found a wish-fulfilling jewel and returned. Then the ocean also became agitated, the nagas also became angry, and the gods who lived there also wept. At that time, a Bodhisattva named Breathing Hermit was born there by the power of his past vows, and that great-hearted being rescued those guests from the great ocean for their happiness and auspiciousness. A fierce Rakshasa, attacking outwards, looking for an opportunity, followed behind those guests. There, for seven days, I emitted a strong red light and a heavy rain fell, and those merchants completely lost their way, and were very

Crying and wailing loudly, chanting lamentations, praying to gods, Kumbhandas, water deities, and evil spirits, my ears heard the sounds of parents and pitiful children crying and calling out to each other. I went to the road and said to the merchants, "Do not be afraid! I will show you the way and lead you safely and auspiciously to Jambudvipa." I took a deep breath, then smeared linen and sesame oil, wrapped my own hand, lit a fire, and spoke the words of truth: "If I have dwelt in the forest for twenty-six years in the manner of the four Brahmaviharas for the sake and benefit of sentient beings, eating the roots and fruits of the forest, maturing the minds of eighty-four thousand gods and yakshas, and have been placed in the irreversible position of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, then by this truth and true words, and by the complete maturation of virtuous roots, may my hand burn and the merchants find the way and reach Jambudvipa safely and auspiciously!" After saying this, my hand burned day and night for seven days, guiding those merchants to Jambudvipa (Indian subcontinent). There I made the aspiration: "When there are no jewels in Jambudvipa (Indian subcontinent), if I can attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, may my wish also be completely fulfilled! May I become the merchant leader of Jambudvipa (Indian subcontinent), take back the wish-fulfilling jewel seven times, and rain down various jewels among all the continents of this Buddha-field! Likewise, in the ten directions of Buddha-fields, filled with the five degenerations, in worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, may there also be a rain of various jewels!" I made such a wish, and my wish was fulfilled, and after passing through great kalpas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, I became a merchant leader, raining down jewels in that many Buddha-fields, and each continent also rained down various jewels seven times. In this way, countless and immeasurable sentient beings

Having completely fulfilled their intentions with great wealth, they must be combined with the three vehicles. Son of the lineage, the Tathagata looks to the root of virtue of completely giving away jewels. Furthermore, after countless eons have passed, in an eon called "Making Joyful," this Buddha-field called "Dim," endowed with the five degenerations, when beings live to be five thousand years old, I, by the power of aspiration, became a Brahmin who recites the Vedas, named Sun Garland Incense, in this Jambudvipa. At that time, most sentient beings always held to permanence and harbored hatred, dwelling in strife, dwelling in oppressing others. I taught those sentient beings, by the great power of oppressing others, to regard the aggregates as enemies, to regard the sense bases as empty cities, to examine the connection of conditions, as well as arising and ceasing, and to remember the mindfulness of breathing in and out. And I combined their roots of virtue with the mind of dedicating to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. I myself also became endowed with the five superknowledges. I taught and guided countless immeasurable sentient beings, so that they also became endowed with the five superknowledges. Likewise, countless immeasurable sentient beings also abandoned strife and hatred, eating roots and fruits in the forests, meditating and spending their days and nights with the four Brahma-viharas. Afterward, when that eon was nearing its end, those places of giving spread throughout the entire Jambudvipa. Strife and contention also subsided, and untimely rain and wind also subsided, and the crops that depended on the land ripened and shone with radiance. However, due to the dangers of the times, there was only the threat of various diseases. I thought to myself: I have not been able to pacify the diseases of these sentient beings. So I gathered Indra, Brahma, the world protectors, and the sages such as the gods, thinking: For the benefit of sentient beings, I should proclaim the treatises on compounding medicine. So I went by means of magical power, from Indra and Brahma to the human sages, gathering them on the mountain called the Lord of the Salt Mountain, that place which is called the peak of enjoying salt.
