MR14 0005.The Garland of Jewels A Biography of the Eight Great Close Sons of the Bodhisattva..g2.0f

Not only was he praised with verses, but also in the past, during the ten complete kalpas of countless eons, when the Tathagata named Light-Illuminating Manifestation of Superknowledge appeared in the world, the Bodhisattva Maitreya transformed into the Brahmin boy named Good Protector. Seeing the Tathagata's body, he developed faith and thought: 'In the future, I too shall become like this body. If that happens, may the Tathagata's feet touch my body.' The Tathagata, knowing the Brahmin boy's thoughts, went to him and touched him with his feet, and immediately he obtained the forbearance of non-arising dharma. Then, the Tathagata, looking at the edge of the monastic robe, said to the monks: 'You should tread on this child's body with your feet. Why? Because he has obtained the forbearance of non-arising dharma.' Having said this, at that time, the Brahmin boy Good Protector also accomplished supernormal powers and superknowledge, and praised the Tathagata with verses similar to the Buddha's. From then on, the supernormal powers or superknowledge of the boy Good Protector did not completely disappear. After saying this, Ananda asked: 'World Honored One, the great Bodhisattva Maitreya has obtained the forbearance of non-arising dharma for so long, why has he not attained unsurpassed Bodhi?' The Buddha said: 'Ananda, the adornment and the complete embrace of Bodhisattvas are these two. Which two? Namely, the adornment of sentient beings and the complete embrace of sentient beings, and the adornment of Buddha-fields and the complete embrace of Buddha-fields. Among these, the great Bodhisattva Maitreya, while practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva, purified and completely embraced the adornment of Buddha-fields. Ananda, I have purified and completely embraced the adornment of sentient beings, and I have also purified and completely embraced the adornment of Buddha-fields. Ananda, I have directly realized that after the Bodhisattva Maitreya has entered the right path, after forty-two kalpas have passed, I will first generate the mind of unsurpassed perfect Bodhi, and after this Bhadrakalpa has passed, there will be nine more kalpas.'

Due to the reason of attaining Buddhahood quickly with the ten powers, I quickly attained Buddhahood by blazing with great diligence. These are the ten dharmas of completely giving up all cherished possessions, such as wealth, enjoyment, kingdom, sons, wives, head, eyes, blood, bones, limbs, and so on. Furthermore, by abiding in the ten dharmas such as discipline and patience, one quickly attains enlightenment to unsurpassed Bodhi and becomes a Buddha. In the past, when a prince was named "Giver of All Wealth," he gave all the blood from his body to a sick person and healed him from the illness. The mass of water in the four oceans can be measured, but the blood I gave for the sake of Bodhi in the past is immeasurable. In the past, when a prince was named "Youthful Flower," he beat his own body and extracted marrow for those afflicted by illness, and by applying it to their bodies, he pacified the illness. The marrow given for the sake of unsurpassed Bodhi exceeds the mass of water in the four oceans and is immeasurable. In the past, when a king was named "Moonlight," he gave his eyes to the blind. The giving of eyes for the sake of unsurpassed Bodhi was more numerous than the dust particles of Mount Meru, the king of mountains, and was immeasurable. Bodhisattva Maitreya, when practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, actually accomplished the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment through the easy vehicle, the path of ease, and the easy way. Maitreya, when practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, did not give up his body, limbs, sons, wives, friends, palace, or vast retinue. Instead, by skillfully and completely mastering them, he attained unsurpassed Bodhi and became a Buddha through the easy vehicle, the path of ease, and the easy way. After this was said, Ananda asked: "Bhagavan, what is the skillful means by which Bodhisattva Maitreya easily attains unsurpassed Bodhi?" The Buddha replied: "When Maitreya practiced the conduct in the past, he made all the Buddhas manifest three times during the day and night with reverence, and he spoke of the manner in which he made aspirations. Bodhisattva Maitreya, when practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, caused sentient beings to have less of the three poisons and to be endowed with the path of the ten virtuous actions. Later, when he himself became a Buddha, he purified himself in such a way that such a time and opportunity arose, and sentient beings had less of the three poisons.
