The Lord of Compassionate Eyes is the protector of the unprotected, the refuge of the refuge-less, the giver of fearlessness to those who are fearful and afraid, the lamp for those who have become dark, the umbrella for those who are scorched by the sun, the medicine for those who are afflicted by disease, the father and mother of those who are suffering, and the one who shows the path to nirvana for those who are born without support. Remembering the name of that Lord of Compassionate Eyes, those beings will be endowed with happiness. They will be liberated from the suffering of old age and death, become the last in samsara, be born in Sukhavati, listen to the Dharma from Amitabha, and always abide there. Thus it is said. Furthermore, from the White Lotus of Compassion: In the past, countless eons ago, in this Buddha-field, in an eon called "Great Sustaining," there appeared in the world a Tathagata named Jewel Essence. In that field, there arose a wheel-turning king named Wheel Rim, who had a thousand sons, and he made great offerings to the Tathagata and his retinue. At that time, our teacher was the advisor to that king, a Brahmin named Ocean Dust, who became the father of that Tathagata Jewel Essence. He turned that king, his thousand sons, and countless other beings away from inferior thoughts and placed them on the path to unsurpassed enlightenment. There, the king's eldest son, Unblinking Eye, beseeched the Tathagata Jewel Essence: "Bhagavan, I have looked upon all beings in the lower realms and the higher realms, and for their sake, I don the armor, dedicating all roots of virtue to unsurpassed enlightenment. When I practice the conduct of a Bodhisattva, if any beings are tormented by suffering, frightened by fear, plunged into darkness by the famine of Dharma, and those who are discouraged, weak, and without refuge or support remember me and speak my name, if my divine ear does not hear, my divine eye does not see, and I do not liberate them from suffering, may I not attain unsurpassed enlightenment! By the power of my special aspiration, may I act for a long time for the benefit of sentient beings."

When I practice the conduct of a Bodhisattva, may my aspirations be completely fulfilled. In this realm of the wheel-turning king, in the Sukhavati realm, between the time when the Tathagata Amitayus attains Buddhahood and his passing into nirvana, may I practice the conduct of a Bodhisattva and thereafter attain enlightenment. Having made this aspiration, the Tathagata Ratnagarbha spoke, saying: "Son of noble family, because you have generated the mind of compassion in order to liberate all sentient beings from suffering and afflictions, you shall be called Avalokiteshvara, the Lord of the World. When you become a Bodhisattva, you will also perform the deeds of a Buddha. After the Buddha Amitabha has passed into nirvana, when twice the number of kalpas equaling the sands of the Ganges River have passed, at dusk on a certain night, at the dawn when the sacred Dharma is disappearing, near many Bodhi trees, on a vajra seat, you will attain unsurpassed enlightenment and become the Tathagata known as 'Radiant Light Shining in All Directions, the King of Glorious Banners.' At that time, the duration of his life will be ninety-six billion, hundred thousand, kotis of years." Thus he spoke. Furthermore, in the Sutra of the Samadhi of Illusion-like Appearance, urged by the rays of light of the Tathagata Shakyamuni, when the great Bodhisattvas Avalokiteshvara and Mahasthamaprapta from the Sukhavati realm came to this land, they emanated various miraculous displays and eight-four kotis of tiered mansions, adorned with many supreme ornaments. There, such a multitude of Bodhisattvas, together with their retinues, descended, prostrated at the feet of the Buddha, and praised him with verses. The Tathagata spoke to the Bodhisattva Padmavyuhagarbha, saying: "Son of noble family, these two holy beings have completely cultivated roots of virtue from countless kalpas, have attained the Samadhi of Illusion-like Appearance, and display various miraculous powers. Look to the east and see what appears." After he had spoken thus, Padmavyuhagarbha looked, and in the Buddha-fields of the east, as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, before such a multitude of Buddhas, were the Bodhisattvas Avalokiteshvara and Mahasthamaprapta.

Like that, offering with two kinds of offerings and so on. In each of the ten directions, also seeing like that, feeling amazed, they asked these two holy beings from which Tathagata they generated the mind of enlightenment, and how long has it been? He replied: In immeasurable past kalpas, and again extremely immeasurable, in kalpas equal to the number of fine dust particles of hundreds of thousands of world realms. In the world realm named Accumulation of Jewels Immeasurable, Constantly Showing Bliss, there appeared a Tathagata named Golden Light Lion Well-Played King. His Buddha-field has immeasurable qualities, if only shown slightly by example, then the arrangement of the Land of Bliss now is like a drop of water taken from the tip of a hair split into a hundred parts. The arrangement of that Buddha's pure land is like the remaining mass of water of the great ocean, and the praise of the qualities of that pure land cannot be exhausted even if spoken of in kalpas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges. In that pure land, there was a Dharma king, the master of a thousand world realms, named Auspicious Glory, who had a hundred kotis of sons, all of whom entered into unsurpassed enlightenment, and together they served that Buddha for eighty-four thousand kotis of years, and upheld the Dharma of the Unbounded Mudra. At another time, when the king was meditating in the pleasure garden, from his left and right shoulders grew two beautiful sandalwood snake-heart lotuses, from which emanated two boys named Jewel Heart and Jewel Victory, and upon seeing them, through mutual questioning and answering, the king also accomplished the five superknowledges. Those two boys, together with the king, went to pay homage to the Bhagavan Golden Light Lion Well-Played King. The two boys asked how to make offerings to the Victorious One, and spoke verses. The Buddha praised, saying: Generating the mind of enlightenment becomes the supreme offering. Those two boys vowed to act for the benefit of sentient beings in the immeasurable past countless kalpas, and from now on, never to generate a mind of affliction.
