It will expound the twelve branches of dependent origination, and one will attain peace and liberation. Just as the essence of rice is the grain among the things belonging to the earth, other yogas are like chaff, and among all, this queen of vidyā-mantras is like a rice stalk. Sons of the lineage, bodhisattvas, make great efforts for the sake of the six pāramitās. By reciting this once, one will completely perfect the six pāramitās. Even holding the name of this vidyā-mantra is rare; if one holds the name once, it will be as if one has honored and revered all the tathāgatas with robes and all kinds of necessities. Then, the one who dispels all obscurations requested the dharma speaker to grant the six-syllable vidyā-mantra, and that dharma master contemplated and remained in meditation. From the sky, a sound arose saying, "Please grant the great six-syllable vidyā-mantra." He wondered from where this sound came. Again, from the sky, a sound arose saying, "This bodhisattva has strived through many hardships, please grant the six-syllable vidyā-mantra." The dharma speaker looked at the sky and saw the form of Avalokiteśvara, realizing that permission had been granted. Then, he immediately granted the six-syllable vidyā-mantra to him, and in that instant, the earth shook in six ways, and the one who dispels all obscurations attained many samādhis, such as the one called "Inexhaustible Dharma Nature." Then, the one who dispels all obscurations began to offer the khenpo (guru) the four continents filled with the seven precious substances as an offering of dharma. That dharma master said, "If there is no merit even for one syllable, what need is there to mention the six-syllable mantra? Son of the lineage, I will not take anything from you, you have become a bodhisattva, you are the one I am taming." He offered him a string of pearls worth a hundred thousand, and he said, "Offer it to the Tathāgata Śākyamuni Buddha with my words." Then, the one who dispels all obscurations prostrated at the feet of the dharma speaker and departed. Having obtained what was to be obtained and completely fulfilled his wishes, he came to Jetavana (G園精舍) in the presence of the Blessed One Śākyamuni Buddha, prostrated, and reported the circumstances of having perfectly obtained the benefit. Furthermore, the Blessed One Śākyamuni Buddha said: I was formerly a Bodhi-

When I became a captain, I entered the great ocean with five hundred merchants, and was cast by unfavorable winds onto the island of the Rakshasis. Five hundred Rakshasis transformed into the forms of young women, and with joyful and deceptive words, each led a companion to their respective dwellings. There, the old Rakshasi led me and began to play. When she was half-asleep and laughing, I asked her why she was laughing. She replied, "This is a Rakshasi dwelling in the island of Simhala (Sri Lanka), who will take your life." If you do not believe it, proceed along the path to the right. I did as she said, and in the iron city I saw the merchants who had previously been seized by the Rakshasis. They said, "We are taken away one hundred at a time each day to be eaten." I asked the one who showed the way for a method. He said, "There is a horse king named Bala-ha, who is beneficial to the lowly and the poor. He knows 'hiding all medicines', and goes back and forth on the golden sandy plain, shaking his body and saying, 'Who goes to the other shore?' If you say, 'I go to the other shore,' he will deliver you to the other shore." I secretly told these words to the other merchants, and we decided to depart in three days. We vowed never to look back at the island of Simhala (Sri Lanka), and then departed. The horse king shook his body, subdued the island of Simhala (Sri Lanka), and said three times, "Who goes to the other shore?" Those merchants replied, "We go to the other shore." Then, the horse king said, "None of you shall look at the island of Simhala (Sri Lanka) with your eyes." First it was I, and then the five hundred merchants riding on horseback. At that time, the Rakshasis chased after us, speaking pitiful words. When they turned back to look, they fell headfirst into the water, and were scooped up and eaten by the Rakshasis. Only I alone went to Jambudvipa (Earth). At that time, the horse king Bala-ha approached the shore, circled me three times, paid homage, and then departed. I also gradually returned to my own home, met my parents, and was overjoyed. The reason I was able to become a captain and be liberated from such suffering and the fear of death was because Avalokiteshvara transformed into the horse king Bala-ha and saved me. Thus, Avalokiteshvara.
