When he said, "I surpass by the power of miraculous abilities," I said, "I surpass by your power," and then, by the power of miraculous abilities, I displayed all the swift transformations, extinguished the fire in the surrounding area of about a fathom, and together with Manjushri, surpassed that world in seven days. Then, at another time, in a world that was even more vast and boundless, when a fire was burning, I stayed between the worlds. Manjushri asked me: Shariputra, by whose power of miraculous abilities will this be surpassed? I said: I surpass by your power. With a single generation of bodhicitta, that world was covered with a lotus net and surpassed. Then, when they said, "Whose power is faster than ours?" I said: Like the swiftness of the hawk among birds and the king of birds, the Garuda, your miraculous abilities are far greater than mine. The Hearers are unequal because they have not severed the connection of habitual tendencies, but before, I thought your miraculous abilities were equal to mine. Previously, on the seashore, there lived two hermits who had attained the five superknowledges, the hermit Dharma-desire who desired the Dharma, and the hermit All-giving, who traveled in the sky by the power of knowledge-mantras. All-giving thought that our two miraculous abilities were equal. All-giving went to the other side of the ocean, to the island of the Rakshasis, and seeing the pleasing sounds of the Rakshasis and their forms, he fell to the ground, and his knowledge and mantras disappeared. Dharma-desire, with a compassionate heart, took him by the hand and placed him in his own abode. At that time, I became Dharma-desire and you became All-giving, and even then, in a state of inequality, the thought of equality arose. So it was said. Also, Shariputra, when I and Manjushri were practicing together in the southern Buddha-fields, having passed countless billions of hundreds of thousands of Buddha-fields, we arrived at a world called "Covered with All Adornments," and went to the field of the Tathagata Precious Life-Tree. They said this: Venerable Shariputra, how did you see the field that we surpassed? I replied: Some places were filled with fire, some places were filled with water, and some places became the sky.

Upaka. Some are rich and prosperous, some decline, some perish, some are filled with evil destinies, and some are free from evil destinies. When they say this, if someone asks how these phenomena should be viewed? He replies that they should be viewed as being filled with fire or water. Manjushri, how do you see it? Manjushri replied: I see all these fields as fields of emptiness, filled with fire or water, etc., which are not real but arise from sudden causes and conditions, and have the nature of arising and ceasing. Emptiness is not born from causes and conditions, but exists in its own nature. Similarly, sudden afflictions make the mind afflicted, but the nature of the mind has never been afflicted. For example, even if countless kalpas of burning have occurred in the past, the sky has never been burned. Similarly, even if each sentient being has accumulated countless non-virtuous deeds like the sands of the Ganges, the nature of the mind has never been afflicted. Entering such a realm of Dharma that is pure in its own nature, there will be no arising, obscuration, or manifestation of actions. This is the Dharma gate of non-arising, and the Bodhisattvas who abide in it, entering the state of purity of the nature of all Dharmas, will never be obscured by sins. He said this. What I (referring to Upaka) personally witnessed of Manjushri's miraculous transformations is only a part of it. The Venerable Ananda said to Shariputra: I also personally experienced that when the Blessed One was staying in Jetavana, a great untimely cloud suddenly descended on Shravasti, and it rained heavily for seven days. Those monks who had attained meditation spent their time by entering into samadhi, while those who had not attained meditation became weak from not having food for seven days and could not go to see the Blessed One. At that time, I reported to the Blessed One about the condition of those monks who had become weak, and the Blessed One instructed me to tell this matter to Manjushri. I went to Manjushri's residence, and at that time Manjushri was teaching the Dharma to Brahma, Indra, and other world-protecting deities, and I told him about this matter.
