If! Chandrakirti said that one should understand emptiness, which is meaningful, that is, the ultimate truth. But no one has said that it cannot be understood. If someone says that because emptiness, the ultimate truth, cannot be expressed in words. Then, this is not only something that those who are not proficient in emptiness, the ultimate truth, would say, but even those who have a clear understanding of the treatises on logic should not say such a crude statement, that is, it cannot be expressed. If we speak from the perspective of the general characteristic, then even the horns of a rabbit, which do not exist in conventional terms, can be expressed through the intention to express them, let alone things that exist in conventional terms? If we speak from the perspective of the self-characteristic, not only emptiness, the ultimate truth, but even objects such as vases cannot be directly expressed in words. Because the self-characteristic is not the object directly expressed by words. This is explained in the treatises on logic. In the Compendium on Valid Cognition, it says: "The objects known by each, are not indicated by conventional terms, but are the objects of sensory consciousness." Also, in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, it says: "Because it is the object and non-object of words." It also says: "For various distinctions, the application of words is not possible." It also says: "Words with a conceptual nature, do not directly point to manifest meanings." And so on, as widely explained. If words directly express the self-characteristic of things, then these things will appear manifestly in the realm of verbal consciousness, and in that case, merely saying "emptiness" will directly realize emptiness, etc., there will be many very excessive consequences, which will not be elaborated here. Therefore, the Commentary on Valid Cognition says: "Having a nature that depends on symbols, it does not grasp manifest meanings." It also says: "For sensory consciousness that has no function, the appearance of other things alone is impossible." And so on, as it is said. If we study the way of understanding things by relying on symbols, then we can combine the object to be expressed and the way of expressing it, and divide them into two ways, direct and indirect, and thus divide them into four situations. However, if one does not understand that mixing appearance and concept together, and expressing and understanding all expressible things through names and words, is the universal law of conventional terms, and thinks that words cannot directly express, then one must admit that even a single dharma of self-characteristic cannot be expressed. Therefore, if we explain it merely from the perspective that emptiness cannot be directly expressed in words, or merely from the perspective that the words of the general characteristic are not the object of concepts, then this is the law of all things with self-characteristic in conventional terms, and is well-known in the treatises on logic.

Since it does not go beyond the scope of conceptualization, how can it become the ultimate nature that is not the scope of speculation? So what is it? Objects such as vases and non-objects such as space belong to the category of things and non-things, or all phenomena that can be understood through affirmation and negation, each of which can be focused on and expressed in its own nature, and therefore becomes the object of conceptualization. The ultimate reality of emptiness is neither a thing nor a non-thing, nor any side of affirmation or negation, nor both nor neither, and cannot be examined or spoken of, so it is said to be unspeakable and not the object of conceptualization. Therefore, through names such as emptiness and the realm of phenomena, its nature is free from the extremes of existence and non-existence, and does not fall into any aspect of appearance and emptiness, etc. In short, by examining its distinctive qualities through affirmation and negation, no matter how many forms of affirmation and negation there are, they can be expressed in words from the mouth, and the conceptualization of examining according to its meaning is not non-existent, it is the gateway to entering its meaning, as in the sutras and treatises, when explaining insight, it is generally said that there are four types of examination of self, nature, and difference. In this way, through examination, the reality becomes an object of self-awareness that is without focus and unspeakable, and although it is realized in a general way, it belongs to the latter of the two teachings and tenets, and it can also be said to be realized in a general way of emptiness. At the time of direct realization, one can actually see or realize such an unspeakable self-characteristic. For this reason, as it is said in the Mother Sutras, extensive, medium, and concise, which teach the ultimate emptiness, all of these are based on the path of sound and language, and emptiness is determined by conceptualization in a general way, but for the ultimate to be determined, there is not the slightest establishment or expression of the form of edge and characteristics, and because all of these are prohibited, it is called determination as unspeakable. Therefore, whether you can speak words from your mouth or not, and the characteristic behavior of the ultimate
