This rumor is certainly untrue. All the methods and approaches are gateways to generating non-conceptual wisdom, and are upheld by non-conceptual wisdom. The all-supreme emptiness, endowed with the aspects of skillful means such as generosity, has been established by the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as the single path to be traversed. Therefore, it is unreasonable for such a negative view to arise. It is also unreasonable for people like Kamalashila to refute it, as no Buddhist scholar would oppose the correct path of the Buddha. If they cite sutras as their source, but do not understand the meaning of the sutras and explain them incorrectly, merely citing them as support does not mean that all those who rely on those scriptures now become of that sect. Even if they taint the meaning of the Buddha's teachings with the defilements of their own minds, the Buddha's teachings do not become non-teachings. Therefore, those who say that the scriptures cited by Heshang are the sect of Heshang, and utter such words, seem to have excluded themselves from the ranks of those who express themselves correctly, both in terms of the way they express words and the way they understand meaning. It is not that others have excluded them. This is not a verbal rebuke in the manner of royalty. Therefore, those who attribute everything that is non-apprehending to the sect of Heshang are sending out linguistic messengers who turn their backs on the profound meaning, showing their own nature, without even a glimpse of the direction of non-elaboration arising in themselves. Without distinguishing between not grasping at anything through the door of definitive understanding drawn from the correct reasoning that examines ultimate reality, and the occasion of not grasping at anything in conventional terms, they hold the Heshang sect's "nothing should be taken to mind" as an obvious sign. And the two, the Buddha's teaching of not taking anything to mind in the manner of not apprehending any object of elaboration, are as different as heaven and earth in meaning, yet you have not even gone in the direction of such meaning, and you consider these two to be the same. From which direction you come, whether India, China, or elsewhere, I cannot guess, but if these statements are not intentional, then the ultimate profound meaning of all the Buddha's scriptures...

In order to prevent those of the degenerate age with inferior fortune from generating doubts and not entering the Dharma, it can be inferred that he appeared in the form of a renunciate. Due to the kindness of Guru Padmasambhava, we Tibetan people have the opportunity to see the scriptures and treatises and engage in hearing, thinking, and meditating. Know that this was not accomplished by anyone else acting on their own. We disciples should be grateful for the kindness of the Guru and live with a sense of repaying his kindness. We no longer expect new treasure teachings, because we know that these sutras, tantras, and commentaries are already perfect and complete. Not only we, but everyone should remember the kindness of Guru Padmasambhava and generate a sense of gratitude, rather than mocking with contempt. I think no Tibetan should do that. Furthermore, in the debate writings, someone said, "Selflessness! It exists in conventional truth." If one clings to this idea, isn't it inevitable? You seem to be making mistakes on such issues. In the Compendium of Valid Cognition, it says, "Connected with name and kind, direct perception is free from conceptualization." It is also known to the new scholars that clinging consciousness is a characteristic of conceptualization. As it says in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, "By completely removing the net of conceptualization, the nature of clarity appears." As it is said, when directly realizing, although one is separated from conceptualization, what harm is there in direct realization? The quote you cited, although it is written "Even if one realizes that this aggregate is emptiness," because there are countless such errors, I am unwilling to refute it. In the Introduction to the Middle Way, it says, "Like fire burning an object, there is a burner and something to be burned, therefore it is burning." Therefore, the burner and what is to be burned are separate. Because it is forbidden to burn oneself, and from the example of fire arising from the friction of two pieces of wood, it is only the agent and the object that are different. So how can the ground from which it arises and the fire that arises from it be one? Therefore, in the Ornament of the Sutras, it says, "Here, initially, relying on hearing, proper attention arises. From the power of familiarizing with proper attention, the wisdom of the true object arises." And as it says in the Ornament, "Repeatedly applying the mind, measuring, and definitely realizing the path of meditation." As it is said, through the realization of hearing, thinking, and meditating, gradually in succession, the wisdom of directly realizing that arises.
