The wise do not completely abide in the middle. As it is said, if viewed from the perspective of the object, the state of being free from extremes, not falling into either existence or non-existence, is the fundamental Middle Way; and the mind or wisdom that accords with it is considered the Middle Way path. Such a non-dual mind can simultaneously eliminate both extremes, so it does not need any other help. According to you, if the absence of inherent existence is to eliminate the extreme of non-existence, then the existence of conventional truth is needed as an aid. Similarly, for the mind that grasps the object, it is necessary to combine the two minds that grasp the object in order to eliminate the two extremes. In this way, there is no situation where one mind can eliminate both extremes, so the so-called place of abiding and the mind of abiding being the Middle Way are just empty names. We believe that all phenomena, the union of appearance and emptiness, free from the eight extremes of conceptual elaboration, is the fundamental Middle Way; and the mind that realizes it is said to abide in the Middle Way path. As for whether the middle and the Middle Way are recognized or not, wise people will naturally discern it. If merely the absence of inherent existence, which is a mere negation, is the ultimate reality, the realm of phenomena, then there is no need to combine the two extremes, four extremes, eight extremes, and thirty-two types of superimpositions, like preventing all attachments, but rather to understand it as preventing the true establishment on top of them. If merely clinging to the absence of inherent existence can eliminate all the extremes of conceptual elaboration and abide in the middle, then that should be possible. However, neither the absence of inherent existence nor clinging to the absence of inherent existence can simultaneously eliminate the two extremes, so didn't you say that the existence of conventional truth is needed as an aid? Therefore, this statement shows that it is necessary to abide in the middle of the two, and you also admit that the two are extremes. If you don't admit it, then it is enough to abide in them themselves, so why abide in the middle of the two? Therefore, the wisdom of the noble ones in meditative equipoise, who directly see the absence of inherent existence, is the emptiness of non-affirmation, the time when dualistic appearances disappear. According to your own view, because it is incomplete, it will not abide in the middle. The ordinary person who thinks that conventional truth exists and ultimate truth does not exist will lead to the fault of abiding in the middle. All that is called the nature body and the realm of phenomena

If it is merely a negative negation, then it is too extreme, so I will not elaborate for the time being. In the Ornament for Clear Realization, it says, "Because of stopping abiding by the manner of permanence, etc." This is the view of the Madhyamaka. If you think that everything directly shown by that text is like the view of the Svatantrika, then you must admit that the intent of the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra abides like the Svatantrika. If Gyaltsap, the Lord of the Tenth Bhumi, did not fully understand the intent of the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, then there is no one else who could understand it more than him. Just as the Ornament for Clear Realization explains it, there are also actual words in the sutra itself that show it in this way, so it would follow that the Buddha is also a Svatantrika. If you say that Nagarjuna said that the Hearers and Solitary Realizers realize emptiness, and Chandrakirti also proved this with reasoning, so that is why you think so, then, even though Nagarjuna and Chandrakirti said that the Hearers and Solitary Realizers realize emptiness, they did not say that they realize perfect emptiness, so that view does not have any fault that would lead the Ornament for Clear Realization to be a Svatantrika text. Because early Tibetan scholars thought that way in both the Svatantrika and Prasangika schools, it is not established that the Ornament for Clear Realization is a Svatantrika school. If it is established, then the freedom from elaboration that is widely established there, the Prasangika must be more excellent than that, how could the Prasangika be more excellent than the former by diligently proving the emptiness that negates some aspects of elaboration that are different from the former? Because that is already established in the Svatantrika texts. Moreover, because the freedom from elaboration that the Svatantrika believes in, the Prasangika does not accept. Therefore, if someone asks, for the meaning of being free from extremes and without an object of focus, what is the middle way explained in the Madhyamaka, is that both or neither of the extremes? It is neither, because it is free from all four extremes. If someone asks, is the middle way that is without truth and exists in conventional terms, which of the two is it? It is the extreme of neither, because those who hold those views have already admitted that it is the middle way that is neither of the two extremes. Even so, Aryadeva said in the Essence of Wisdom Collected from All Sutras: "Therefore, do not think of existence, and also abandon the mind of non-existence. Those who desire the state of omniscience should abide in the middle way."
