In the realms of meaning, the great scholars and accomplished ones of the past and present agree. If it can be accomplished, the upholders of the doctrine in the snowy land will attain the joy of Dharma free from disputes. This is an intermediate verse. Again, in the polemical text: If the Hearer's Vehicle school clings to the absence of self of the individual and clings to inherent existence, it is too extreme to assert that it falls into two extremes. The Mind-Only school explains the meaning of the profound and limitless sutras and tantras, and in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*, it is said that by this path and this practice, one will achieve accomplishment and attain the unsurpassed bliss of Nirvana. It has been said that realizing emptiness and selflessness is the supreme path, and in the chapter on Āyusmat Kāśyapa, it is said that the middle between those two extremes is the Middle Way. All of the Madhyamikas and Yogācāras establish this, but you still say that to go beyond that is to want to jump into the abyss of the fifth extreme. If one cannot abide in the middle of the two extremes, then what is the other extreme besides the middle being both, and neither of the two? It becomes the fault of the absence of a middle as stated by the Madhyamikas. In the *Madhyāntavibhāga*, "Not empty, not non-empty, with existence, with non-existence, with existence," etc., as the Second Omniscient One explained the meaning of the *Prajñāpāramitā Sutra*, it should be explained according to the tenets of the Mind-Only school. In the *Abhisamayālaṃkāra*, "In that, with permanence, etc.," as it is said, the Mind-Only school and the Svātantrika school should also accept that in their respective treatises, they explain the emptiness free from elaboration that is free from all extremes, and they should also acknowledge it. You say that the Svātantrika school only accepts nominal existence, and the Prāsaṅgika school only accepts non-nominal existence. If that is the case, then it is also written that ultimate truth is the door for the former to enter the latter. If it is divided into two in this way, and the former is accepted as the door, is this your school, the unprecedented fifth school? Since the Svātantrika school accepts the latter, you have also acknowledged it by quoting the proof of the *Madhyamakālaṃkāra* that unbornness, etc., is impossible. If one communicates with reason, in the tenets of the Svātantrika school, one can know by examining which emptiness that refutes the extreme of existence established by truth, and the emptiness that is free from the four extremes, is not accepted.

If it is said clearly that the two, ultimate and conventional, are not distinguished, then it follows that he considers the great emptiness that is not established in the ultimate sense and is free from the four extremes. Because he does not consider it to be nominal. It is not possible to think so, because it is said that 'even non-existence is no more' as quoted in the previous commentary. In response to the saying 'because', the answer is: The Hearer's school holds only to the selflessness of the person, and other phenomena besides that are held to exist by their own nature. Although this is not free from falling into two extremes when examined by the Madhyamikas, they cannot enter the freedom from extremes of the Great Vehicle, so we believe that their own path is the selflessness of the person, and that self clings to the emptiness of phenomena, and the sixteen aspects of the four truths such as impermanence and suffering are objects of clinging and focus. If, like you, it is thought that clinging to the selflessness of the person and existence by nature also belongs to the Madhyamikas who abide in the middle of the two, that is also reasonable. If, like the Hearers, it is thought that they have fully realized emptiness, then there is no need to mention the Madhyamikas. As the Mind-Only school says, by the path of realizing emptiness and selflessness, it is said that accomplishment and the attainment of unsurpassed bliss of Nirvana are attained, as in the chapter of Good Protection, such emptiness and selflessness, 'What is the middle of the two extremes' etc., like this, all Madhyamikas and Mind-Only keep it as it is, and most scholars say that it is said in the treatise on distinguishing the middle and the extremes explained in the Mind-Only system, and in the Ornament of Sutras, 'non-existence' etc., is indeed so. However, these texts do not, like you, regard the 'middle' as a place to abide in, like the space between two pillars, as an object of focus, but say that the middle is not focused on. As it is said in the chapter of Good Protection in the Jewel Heap Sutra: 'Good Protection, permanence is called one extreme, impermanence is called two extremes. What is the middle of these two extremes, that is inconceivable, unteachable, without support, without appearance, without discrimination, without place. Good Protection, this is called the Middle Way, which is the true realization of all phenomena.' Similarly, 'I is called one extreme, selflessness is called two extremes. What is the middle of these two extremes, that is inconceivable' etc., infer as above.
