If one clings to existence, it is said that one will fall into the extreme of existence. Thus, if one clings to neither, one will fall into the extreme of neither. Therefore, there is no doubt for those who follow the monk Mahayana without any clinging, because they have obtained the share of being naked, so there is no pursuit of revenge either. So it is said. Sher Jung said: In this way, the absence of inherent existence itself is the root of all things, but it does not exist by ultimate nature, and so on, he said extensively. It is said. This also shows various coarse and subtle ways of refuting extremes. Since conditioned things perish in an instant, they are not permanent. Since the effect arises from the cause, they are not annihilated. Understanding the principle of dependent origination is a way to prevent the coarse extremes of permanence and annihilation that are accepted by outsiders. Also, if emptiness is considered to be a non-affirming negation, then as it is said in the Discrimination of the Middle and Extremes: The unreal conceptualization exists, in this, both do not exist, emptiness alone exists in this, in this also that nature exists, neither empty nor not empty, thus everything is explained, by existence, non-existence, and existence, this is called the Middle Way. As it is said, since other-powered existence is not non-existence, and since there are no apprehended and apprehender in this, it is not existence. Thus, not falling into the extremes of existence and non-existence, and emptiness and non-emptiness, it is considered the Middle Way. Also, as far as conventional ultimate truth is concerned, there is no true existence, and it exists in name, so the Madhyamaka that does not abide in the two extremes, these are the ways to prevent the subtle extremes of permanence and annihilation, because they are becoming more and more profound, so for these three systems, it is not said that they each cannot eliminate their respective extremes of permanence and annihilation, however, combining the two aspects of non-reality and nominal appearance, examining with the wisdom that distinguishes phenomena after attainment and acknowledging it, this way of eliminating the two extremes is elaborate, and in this regard, one does not say "I am neither existent nor non-existent", but only says non-self. Even if it is said like that, this so-called non-self also belongs to the correct conventional truth, it is merely appearing as the object of conceptual thought. The ultimate truth of reality, non-conceptual, the object of the wisdom of non-conceptual equipoise, how to ultimately examine

If examined with reason, both self and non-self are merely imputed by conceptual thought, and are the same in that their own nature is not established. Therefore, both will equally become without an object of focus. As the Protector Maitreya said, "The elaborations of self and non-self, for the sake of pacifying, the noble self." As it is said, if pacifying elaborations is the main point, then there is no acceptance of either self or non-self, so according to that system, it would be held that both are not. This cannot be refuted, because for that which has no object of focus, it is asserted that there is no grasping of any of the four extremes. Therefore, in that way, all subtle clinging to extremes can be cut off simultaneously. Likewise, Aryadeva also said, "Not existent, not non-existent, not existent and non-existent, nor the nature of both, the Madhyamika who is liberated from the four extremes, is the very truth of the wise." Just like this, it is repeatedly said in the sutras and treatises, so everyone, both self and others, must know the way to explain it. If it is done from the perspective of those who have assertions, then a distinction must be made, and it must be asserted that it is not truly established as existent, nor is it non-existent in name. It must be asserted that the existent and non-existent as just mentioned are both, and it is not appropriate to assert that both are not, nor is it appropriate to assert that not both are not. In that case, there will never be an assertion that is free from the latter two of the four extremes. If one carelessly says that both truly existent and non-existent in name are not, without considering the former existent and non-existent, then there is nothing to understand other than repeating the former meaning. If that is the case, then how can "not both are not" be applied? If a distinction is made for the former two of the four possibilities, but not for the latter two, saying that existent and non-existent are both, and not both are also not, then it is impossible for one basis to have its own nature as both existent and non-existent. Moreover, since not both is also non-existent in name, if one asserts that way, then here, what does existent and non-existent refer to, existent and non-existent in conventional truth, or existent and non-existent in ultimate truth? If it is the former, then the extreme of "both are" where it is both existent and non-existent in name is impossible. If it is a phenomenon that exists in name, then it necessarily pervades that both non-existent in name and non-non-existent in name are not, in that case, due to the stacking of double negatives, it becomes establishing that both are, so such an assertion is never possible. If both
