Oh. Thus, he made arguments by quoting scriptures. Furthermore, if someone says, "Like this, you don't give anything," and (I) say, "Please give me that thing called 'I have nothing,'" then how can one make him grasp onto having nothing? Similarly, how can one prevent those who are attached to emptiness from being attached to entities? Moreover, whoever fully knows that all phenomena are of the nature of falsehood, how can he conceive of any phenomenon as either existing or not existing?" Thus it was said. In the Madhyamaka-hrdaya, it says: "The thought that things are non-existent, is not desired to be true, because it is established through the gate of discrimination, like the thought of a fool." And, in the commentary on it, the Tarkajvala, it is clearly explained that the non-affirming negation that negates the existence of things is not established as the reality. It is said that the essence of the great Madhyamika scholars' instructions is gathered in the Madhyamaka-ratna-pradipa of the teacher Bhāvaviveka. It says: "At that time, consciousness does not abide in anything, nor does it discriminate anything, nor is there any thought, it does not abide in any extreme, consciousness is not born in the nature of anything, one should meditate on nothing." And, in the Madhyamaka-satyadvaya, it says: "The negation of birth and so on, is also desired to be in accordance with reality, because there is nothing to be negated, in reality the absence of negation is clear, in reality there is no duality, that is without elaboration. Manjushri asked about reality, the son of the Victorious One remained silent." Thus it was said. The silence itself is widely explained. Thus, when Manjushri asked Vimalakirti of the Licchavis, because that itself is unspeakable, he remained silent, thereby showing that what is in fact unspeakable cannot be truly determined by the elaboration of words. Just as Manjushri gave praise. Does Vimalakirti not think that that Suchness is without inherent existence? In the Madhyamakalankara, it says: "In reality, that is liberated from all collections of elaboration." And, in the Madhyamaka-aloka of Kamalashila, it says: "Therefore, this unbornness is also in accordance with the ultimate truth, but in reality it is not the ultimate truth, in reality it is

Because it is the Holy One who has transcended all elaborations. Furthermore, if the view of the Kadampas must be in accordance with Atiśa, then from Atiśa's treatise on the two truths, it is known that: The ultimate truth is one, while others consider it to be two. Self-nature is unestablished, which is the nature of reality, how can two and three, etc., change? Thus, it is declared that freedom from elaboration is the sole ultimate truth. Again, it is said: Through the arrangement of the words of the teachings, it is indicated by unborn, unceasing, etc. Through the way that ultimate truth is without difference, there is neither phenomenon nor the nature of reality. In emptiness itself, there is not even a slight difference. To realize through the mode of non-realization, it is labeled as seeing emptiness. And it is said: Without beginning or end, peaceful, completely abandoning existence and non-existence, without any conceptualization, devoid of an object of focus. And it is said: Direct perception and inference are embraced by the Buddhas. Those foolish ones who see this shore say that emptiness is realized through these two. And so on. There is no need for direct perception and inference. It was done by the wise in order to refute the arguments of the tirthikas. It is also clearly stated in the scriptures that the two kinds of consciousness, with and without conceptualization, cannot realize it, as the learned teacher Bhāviveka said. If asked, by what is emptiness realized? As the Tathagata prophesied: Nāgārjuna and his disciple Candrakīrti are those who see the truth of the nature of reality. Through the oral instructions transmitted from them, the truth of the nature of reality will be realized. These scriptural citations, as stated in the polemical text, such as in the Prajñāpāramitā Sutras and their commentaries, and in the collections of Madhyamaka reasoning, extensively explain the absence of inherent existence. Although there is no need to elaborate on such explanations, in these scriptural citations, the nature of freedom from elaboration is undeniable and cannot be altered by distorted interpretations, just like this. Therefore, what is called inexpressible and freedom from elaboration seems to have existed since the time of the Buddha. Unlike what was newly created by the Chinese monk, it is also practiced in the hearts of the Indian and Tibetan paṇḍitas, and the previous lamas who possess an unbroken lineage of oral instructions. Also, those who hold the Prasangika lineage, such as Patsab Lotsawa, when they inquired of their respective guru paṇḍitas, in any case, cannot go against the Madhy
