Only in this way can it be determined. Similarly, the reasoning that refutes self-awareness, as stated in other treatises, should also be understood in this way. Therefore, if we consider the examples of swords, etc., a sword itself cannot nominally cut itself. However, that alone does not necessarily mean that the object to be illustrated by the example does not exist nominally, just as in the example of inanimate objects like vases, the horns of a nanny goat, etc., are also posited. If it were not so, then the direct cognition of one's own mind would not exist even nominally, which will be explained below. Therefore, the term 'self-awareness,' although not established upon correct analysis, such a designation of self-awareness based on its opposite is not only harmless to the Prasangikas but also becomes like a beneficial medicine. Why? Because the saying 'the head of Rahu,' Rahu, whose head was cut off in the past, did not die due to the power of drinking nectar, and wanders in the world, and it is believed that it has no body other than its head, but there is such a saying in the world. Similarly, terms for limbs and those with limbs, such as 'the body of a sparrow,' are merely established by name, and it is permissible to establish terms of action and agent in the world, because this is the unique view of the noble Chandrakirti. For those who allow such nominal designations, why is the term 'self-awareness' not permissible? Moreover, just as old people in the world directly experience vases, etc., from the infallible experience of clearly experiencing one's own mind, it is also universally acknowledged that one's own mind knows itself. Therefore, as it is said in the sutra, 'Because from what one experiences the object, from that...' etc. Because from experiencing happiness, etc., there is no other grasping existing in me, therefore one will realize that one's own mind is knowing, and this is also the worldly conventional custom. Therefore, even if one agrees with worldly people and acknowledges self-awareness merely on the level of convention without analysis, that system becomes very easy. In the Ornament of Dense Array Sutra, it says: 'Various appearances are one's own mind, the nature of sentient beings is twofold, outer and inner and everywhere, existing like the grasped and the grasper. Mind seeing mind is seeing, but fools do not comprehend, the two-mouthed mind is that of sentient beings.'

Furthermore, those who have not realized it also cling to it as "mine" in the same way. It also clearly appears as places and so on, existing in forms such as pottery. Pottery and so on do not exist either. For this meaning, the Buddhas, and the weak yogis thoroughly enjoy. As it is said in the tantras such as the Chakrasamvara Root Tantra: "Because it is not material, it is self-knowing by nature." If it is not like that, then do those who hold the Prasangika view admit that their own mind is directly known by themselves, or do they admit that they do not know? If they say they know, is it known self-evidently, or is it known because the knowledge to be known and the knower are different entities? If it is the former, then self-awareness is established. If it is the latter, then what knowledge, simultaneous with or subsequent to the mind to be known, must know it? If it is not simultaneous, then it is necessary to establish how it is direct perception when the object does not exist now, and whether the knowledge of looking outward and looking inward arises alternately. Even if it is simultaneous, it is necessary to know by what it is known that there are two such minds. As it is said, "It is not permissible to say that it exists even without grasping." If there is a grasping mind for all minds, then there will be countless faults such as minds becoming endless, and even a single independently existing grasping aspect will not be possible, let alone many? If there is no other grasper, then just as the eye can see a pot but cannot see itself, one's own mind becomes hidden to oneself, and even if it is impossible to directly know what kind of conceptual thought has arisen in one's own mind, whether it has become like this or not, it is necessary to analyze what kind of mind has arisen in oneself, without relying on signs, and to say what causes this certainty. If one thinks that such detailed analysis is not necessary, then even a Prasangika should be able to answer the question of whether one's own mind knows itself or not. If asked, "How is it known?" one should also be able to say, so if there is no self-awareness, then the way of determining one's own and others' minds will become indistinguishable, etc. This is not an unnecessary refutation, because in this teaching of the Buddha, the glorious Dharmakirti, who is the crown jewel of all logicians of conventional reasoning, has made such an examination, so the essence of his tenet is self-awareness, and it is unreasonable to equate self-awareness with the son of a barren woman.
