If we look at it as "knowing," since the knower and the known do not appear as two, not to mention the substance of the three actions of agent, object, and action, even the mere reversal is not different. How can one know oneself? Thinking that it is unknowing is very crude. If the substances of the knower and the known were different, how could it be self-knowing? It should be other-knowing. For any knowledge with any kind of form, on the same basis, the reversal of the three actions of agent, object, and action, which are labeled by worldly terms, exists. This is a coarse mind that has not engaged in analysis and does not know how it exists, as shown above. In general, self-knowing is manifestly established, but because it is corrupted by the analysis of philosophical systems, certainty is not generated, so it is merely that the term "self-knowing" is not used. If we think inwardly like this, Whatever arises in one's own consciousness is manifestly clear and without doubt to oneself, without the need for alternating between earlier and later times. This is manifest self-knowing. Although it is like that, to say that there is no self-knowing is like holding something in one's hand and denying that one is holding it, which is very surprising. Like that, although the meaning is manifestly established, there are other cases where its term is not used. Although a cow devoid of generality is manifestly seen, those who live on leftovers and whose intelligence has become perverted acknowledge that the cow possesses generality. Although feeling is experienced by self-knowing as the nature of consciousness, the Samkhyas and others acknowledge it as the nature of matter. Similarly, the outsiders also say that self-knowing is impossible. Therefore, whether self-knowing exists in name or not is something to be established by reasoning, so there is no point in refuting or establishing it solely by scripture. If it is said that even if there is no self-knowing, the way memory arises can be exemplified by a mouse smelling poison, how is this not negating self-knowing in name? Because in ultimate truth, even if there is no self-knowing, the way memory arises cannot be established. Just as when a mouse merely smells the odor, it does not taste the poison at all, even though the previous experiencer has never experienced himself, Is it not shown later that he grasps the form of the previous experiencer? If you ask this, it is indeed so. Even if there is no self-knowing, the way memory arises can only be nominal. But that kind of formulation only seems to negate self-knowing in name, but it is not so in reality.

Therefore, it is impossible to negate it in conventional truth when it is negated in ultimate truth. Why is that? For example, the mind that experiences a blue object is undeniably established for everyone. And that blue apprehension, even though there is no second mind of experience in the world of conventional terms, the name "blue apprehension" is obtained by the power of experiencing blue. Similarly, when blue is later remembered, its object-possessing blue apprehension should also be remembered, because in the past, when experiencing, there were only those two, the object and the object-possessor. Later, when remembering, it is only remembering the object-possessor in relation to the object, because it is under the power of the same continuum. That is, without investigation, it is only the way of worldly conventions, but if investigated from the ultimate truth, neither experience nor memory can be established. Therefore, such a combination of words only means that there is an object-possessing blue apprehension, but there is no independent apprehending aspect that can recognize or experience it again, which is to negate that it does not exist even in conventional terms. If one thinks like this: if there is an independent mind apart from the object-possessor, then it is not self-awareness, because other consciousnesses will recognize others, and one must also accept endless apprehending aspects and other infinite faults. Therefore, among the speakers of the Sutra and Mind teachings, there is not a single one who accepts such self-awareness, and ordinary people in the world do not accept it either, so such a negation would have no relevance at all. This is a key point that needs to be understood very clearly. What is it? If one accepts that self-awareness is truly established, then merely by imputation without substance, the meaning of self-awareness cannot be established. Moreover, the three, agent, object, and action, must also be established from their own side. Therefore, the object of cognition, blue apprehension, must have an independent apprehending aspect of the cognizer, because without it, the meaning of imputation of oneself acting on oneself cannot be found upon examination. If it cannot be found, then self-awareness also becomes merely a name, and cannot become the ultimate truth. Even if there is an independent one, it is not reasonable to be self-awareness, and there is no such thing in conventional terms, and the other party does not accept it either. Thus, negating the true establishment of self-awareness is the main reason for stating the harm to the tenets of the school that speaks of the true establishment of the two emptinesses of consciousness. Because the means of establishing consciousness is self-awareness, and the object to be established is self-luminous consciousness, if examined from the perspective of truth, it is merely imputation, and the meaning of imputation cannot be established.
