If one clings to the inherent existence of a basis that is without parts as being truly established, then it is impossible to fully realize the selflessness of that dharma. Therefore, even if one only realizes that the gross substance of a pot is not established, one cannot say that one has thereby realized the selflessness of the pot. Similarly, even if one only realizes the gross selflessness of a person, such as the non-existence of a permanent self, one cannot thereby understand that one has realized the selflessness of the person. In this way, by relying on the understanding that the gross aggregates are not a single whole but are merely imputed upon a collection of many parts, one can fully possess the subtle selflessness that realizes that the self of a person is not established by its own nature. This is because one can understand that the object of clinging of the innate self-grasping is merely imputed in dependence and that there is not even a little bit of establishment by its own nature, just as it is established by the reasoning of the sevenfold chariot. One should understand it in this way. Like this, by relying solely on the reasoning of the sevenfold chariot, one can now know from one's own experience that for this aggregate, which is of the nature of being multiple and impermanent, "I" is merely imputed and that "I" does not exist by its own nature. In this way, if one understands it through reasoning and cultivates it, then it is possible to generate the ultimate of clear appearance, because what is being realized is the correct meaning, just like directly seeing the aspects of truth such as impermanence. If one sees that, then through cultivating it, why would one not abandon the innate self-grasping? If one does not abandon it, then the realization of selflessness will also become the same as that. If one thinks that self-grasping will not be reversed because the clinging to the truth of one's own aggregates has not been refuted, then, even if the object of clinging of innate self-grasping is not just "I" but must be the aggregates, it is clearly stated in the scriptures that it is not so, and the distinction that in conventional terms the self is not a substance but the aggregates are a substance is also reasonable. It is the way of speaking of reason that knowing both the object and the self to be empty reverses both of their grasping. If knowing the object to be empty does not reverse the grasping because the basis of imputation has not changed, then even if one knows all dharmas to be without inherent existence, it will be difficult to reverse the clinging to truth and attachment if all appearances have not changed. If one thinks that because it is empty while appearing, one does not cling to it, and mere appearance does not generate clinging to truth, then even if one merely grasps the aggregates as true, if one does not grasp them as true with the thought "it is I", then merely grasping the aggregates

It is not necessary, because the objects of these two are different. As for the meaning of the scriptures such as "As long as there is clinging to the aggregates," etc., it has already been briefly mentioned above, so it will not be elaborated here. If a beginner thinks, "Merely clinging to the aggregates and also clinging to one's own continuum, wouldn't that give rise to self-grasping?" It is not so. When it is determined that the aggregates, which are by nature a collection of many, do not have a single entity, and it is determined that they are impermanent by nature, then merely conceptually imputing them as self, and realizing that there is no real self, just as one's own continuum has many parts, it is impossible for the innate thought of thinking that there are many selves to arise. And, when it is seen that the basis for clinging to a single self, this aggregate that is the basis for imputation, definitely does not exist, how can one cling to one's own continuum as self? It is like clinging to a rope as having a snake, but not clinging to it as a snake. Even if some schools assert that partless atoms and partless moments are the ultimate truth, that is only asserting that they are established nominally through the analysis of consciousness. But this aggregate, which is the basis for happiness and suffering, as long as it appears to exist, can only appear as having parts, and cannot appear as partless. Even if there are many partless entities and moments, it can be determined by reason that they are not self, and it can be directly realized, so merely that does not give rise to the fault of clinging to self. Therefore, for the Arhats who directly see that all conditioned phenomena are impermanent and are in the form of many scattered parts, the appearance of their own continuum of aggregates is like rain and flowing water, a collection of many, constantly moving, shifting, and striking without a moment's rest. Since that is the case, how can they think that that basis is self, and cling to it as being established by its own nature? It is impossible to cling. Thus, even if one has not conceptually examined or analyzed the collection of one's own continuum of aggregates, but thinks that it is self, when one knows that the self that is clung to, like a snake on a rope, is neither one with nor different from the aggregates, but is merely a conceptual imputation, and becomes accustomed to it, even if one has not realized that the subtle aggregates are without inherent existence, self-grasping can be reversed. Even if the thought of permanence arises because conditioned phenomena arise continuously without interruption, when it is determined that the moments are all separate, the thought of permanence will definitely be reversed, and will not
