Therefore, one should not destroy the beautiful lotus of good doctrine with distorted words such as the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas not realizing a partial emptiness. Furthermore, the way to abandon what is to be abandoned is also unreasonable, because until the afflictions and their seeds are abandoned, one cannot abandon even a small part of the afflictions' imprints or the obscuration of knowledge. For example, just as the subtle traces of oil stains cannot be removed until the oil that has fallen on the cloth has been wiped away. As it says in the commentary on the Entering the Middle Way: Even if sesame oil and flowers, etc., have been removed, the subtle qualities of contact with them can still be discerned on vases and woolen cloths, etc. In this way, even if the afflictions are abandoned, there are still imprints, etc., and there are many scriptural citations that serve as evidence. For these reasons, if this is in accordance with the intention of the great chariots, even if it is a Tibetan view, it should be accepted. Then, how should we cite the many sutras and treatises that say that the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not fully realize the selflessness of phenomena? There is, that they do not realize the selflessness of phenomena, which means that although the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas have the wisdom to realize that all phenomena are without inherent existence, they do not realize it through limitless kinds of reasoning. One should follow the authoritative person who possesses valid reasoning and proclaim it loudly. So it is said. Here, I will explain the order of the answers. Among them, the reasoning that shows that the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas have realized emptiness is what is said in the commentary on the Entering the Middle Way, "The power of long habituation increases." The main points of these are briefly explained here: Grasping at the self of a person is the root of all afflictions that arise in samsara, and if the self that is the object of that is inherently established, then the grasping at self cannot be abandoned. However, this has not been examined, it is merely imputed in dependence on the aggregates, and it is not established by its own nature. How can one know that the self is imputed in dependence on the mere aggregates, which are many and impermanent, and is of the nature of emptiness, and thereby be liberated from samsara? This and the emptiness of the aggregates, etc., or the teaching of the selflessness of phenomena, are only different in terms of what is being emptied, but there is no difference in the way of realizing it, and the self arises in dependence

Realizing emptiness with a state also requires relying on the prior knowledge that the coarse nature of the aggregates is merely imputed and not substantially existent. The way to establish this through reasoning is shown to reverse the mind's disagreement with the selflessness of phenomena or emptiness. Emptiness is merely the absence of its own intrinsic nature in a dependently arising phenomenon, and nothing else. If the Hearers (Śrāvakas) do not accept this at all, then it is impossible to realize the selflessness of persons. Until the innate view of the perishable that grasps the self imputed on the aggregates as being established by its own nature is refuted, even if one knows that there is no permanent, single, independent self, that alone will not lead to liberation, as it would be similar to the dispassion of non-Buddhists. This is established through reasoning. The root text also states: "If you abandon the permanent self, then for that reason, your mind or aggregates will not become the self. Because your yogi sees selflessness, he will not realize the suchness of forms, etc. Because he enters by focusing on form, attachment, etc., will arise, because the nature of that is not realized." As it is said, if you, the Hearers, do not want the emptiness of dependent arising, even if you realize that there is no permanent self, you will not abandon the grasping of the self as being established by its own nature. Like a bubble, if you cannot destroy even the coarse grasping of merely imputing coarseness to the collection of many phenomena, how can you realize that form is empty by its own nature? Therefore, you will not realize the suchness of forms, etc. Because you grasp form as beautiful and, focusing on it, attachment, etc., will arise with the thought, "I will meet with this," because the nature of that object is not realized. Thus, because you do not understand the suchness of objects such as form, and you abide in the object and have not abandoned self-grasping, it is also shown that there is subtle proliferation. This is understood by conforming to the statements of the auto-commentary. Even for this whole or coarse aggregate that is not established, the name of coarse selflessness of phenomena is permissible, because whatever phenomenon is to be known is merely imputed, and the fact that it is not established by its own nature must be the emptiness of that phenomenon. However, even if one only accepts that the coarse aggregate is not substantially established, its implication...
