Because of the presence of flaws. To state a generality when referring to a particular is mistaken, like saying "no one exists" when intending to say "Devadatta does not exist." Furthermore, the way the negative particle is used is also inappropriate. It would be more fitting to say "even without afflictions," but saying "even if not" is meaningless. If one thinks to add the words "even if existent, it is not" to explain, then adding whatever one pleases is difficult to establish, and what is the point of taking on the labor of self-fabrication? Moreover, if the reason for non-existence must be explained as the craving brought about by the later self-grasping, then the mere interrogative phrase "why is it non-existent?" cannot demonstrate that by its own power. And it is also not certain from the implication of the preceding words, because even if there is no such thing as the non-existence one wants to assert, there is no reason to assume that there must be such a thing as the craving for the existence one wants to assert. This is because it is not contradictory for the first craving not to be manifest and for the later one also not to exist. Therefore, the phrase "why is it non-existent, what does it pursue?" becomes an obscure and confusing statement. And since the mere reason of feeling has no power over the object to be proven that one desires, it becomes a treatise in which many distinctions must be sought and applied by clairvoyance. Furthermore, the craving in the continuum of an Arhat that you posit, even if it is not an affliction as explained in the Abhidharma, just as with universal ignorance, one should also, with regard to craving, distinguish whether it is an affliction or not, as explained in the Abhidharma, and then inquire "why is it non-existent?" Only then will it become the essential point of the treatise. Moreover, if one explains that phrase in a different way, how will the two cravings that you want to express be explained? Even if it is established in the eyes of others whether craving is an affliction or not, it is of no help in establishing the craving that propels rebirth in samsara, which you want to establish in this context, and is merely futile. In general, when one fully realizes that there is no self that is an independently existing entity, then one can also realize that the self is merely imputed on the aggregates and is not established by its own nature, as other wise ones also assert. If one were to elaborate on such explanations, there would be a great deal to say, but I have only spoken to illustrate the point. Your treatise states that there is also an innate self-grasping that grasps the person as an independently existing entity, while most others believe that the person is established by its own characteristics.

Worldly views are innate, and whatever else is said to be imputed. However, all the craving accumulated from the actions of a single individual's being, without differing in their specific characteristics, are led by the single, innate self-grasping, entering with the mere thought, "I shall be happy." It is not the case that one enters thinking, "I shall make such a self happy," adding distinctions such as permanence and independence. As it is said: "Those who have spent many eons as animals have not seen this unborn, permanent self, but self-grasping is seen even in them." The manner is similar to that. Here, even if one meticulously examines each slight difference in the explanation of the words by various systems without contradicting the essential point, and does not make a distinction in the answers, there is no harm. From "If liberation comes from abandoning afflictions" to "These feelings are also present," this shows that the ultimate intention of the Lotus Sutra and others, which is the One Vehicle, is established by Nagarjuna and his spiritual sons through the path of reasoning. How is it established solely through the wisdom that realizes suchness? As it is taught in the Entering (Madhyamakavatara), "Because in this, it is through the knowledge of thatness," and so forth, this text also makes this point in this context. In the Sutra of the Lion's Roar of the Glorious Garland, it says: "Bhagavan, that is so. Therefore, even the Arhats and Pratyekabuddhas possess a remainder of the nature of birth. Bhagavan, there is no birth superior to their birth." And, "Bhagavan, there are these two kinds of dying and transference: what two? Dying and transference that is continuous, and dying and transference that is completely dedicated and inconceivable. Bhagavan, the dying and transference that is continuous is that of sentient beings who possess connection to rebirth. Bhagavan, the dying and transference that is completely dedicated and inconceivable is that of the Arhats, Pratyekabuddhas, great Bodhisattvas who have attained power, and those with mind-made bodies, until they reach the heart of enlightenment." And, considering the first dying and transference, "The Arhats and Pratyekabuddhas have the knowledge that 'my birth is exhausted,'" and so forth. "Bhagavan, afflictions are of two kinds: afflictions of the place and all the
