Due to the relationship between the object and the subject, the current blue perception of the object will also be remembered. Because here, the blue perception separated from blue is never cognized. When one remembers the blue that one has previously experienced, the conceptual thought of remembering the aspect of the object-possessing that holds it also arises. But it is not the case that one has previously experienced a blue perception separated from blue. It is like when a poisonous mouse bites in winter, one only feels numbness, but at that time one does not experience the poison. But when the sound of thunder in spring awakens the poison, it is like the initial arising of the knowledge that recognizes the previous poison, thinking that the poison had previously entered my body along with the wound. Also, like this, after cultivating calm abiding, Possessing other conditions such as cultivating special insight, since one can see the minds of others, why can't one clearly see oneself who is very close? It's like if one can see a distant hair, one will surely be able to see a nearby thread. If you say so, that is not certain. It is like applying eye medicine that has been accomplished through secret mantras and the like to the eyes, one can see distant objects such as buried treasure vases that are obscured and obstructed underground, but one cannot see the very close eye medicine itself. Or, because the essence of the vase and the eye medicine will not become one, so possessing other conditions can see other things, this can only be used as an example of seeing others, not as an example of seeing oneself, but will cause harm, some also explain it this way. To this, the Mind-Only school says: If knowledge itself is not clear and aware, one cannot clearly know oneself, and one cannot clearly know others. If so, then all the terms of seeing with the eyes, hearing with the ears, and knowing with the mind will be interrupted. Because all of this must rely on clear and aware knowledge to be established, otherwise it is impossible. If, like this, one states based solely on feeling good without careful analysis, then here there is no refutation, because it can neither be refuted nor needs to be refuted. So what should be prevented? Here, what should be prevented is clinging to all things that are the source of suffering as true. Here, seeing is explained as direct perception, hearing is from others or scriptures, and knowing is explained by establishing terms through inference and valid cognition.

In short, refuting self-awareness is to refute it in the ultimate sense, not to refute the way it is nominally designated as self-awareness merely by being separate from matter. Because if that were refuted, one would have to concede that one's own mind is hidden from oneself, and then there would be no difference in the way one's own and others' minds are judged by knowledge, and the proof that there is mind in one's own continuum would be unreasonable, and ultimately even the term 'meaning-awareness' would be cut off, which would be harmful as stated by the Lord of Reasoning. All the reasons for refuting self-awareness should be understood as refuting the ultimate sense, just as the reasons for refuting the aggregates, etc., but not as being completely non-existent when refuted nominally. This system says that even nominally it does not accept self-awareness as the basis of all, but here there is neither refutation nor establishment nominally, only refutation in the ultimate sense. Some say that if one is a Madhyamika, one should not accept the basis of all, because the basis of all is the tenet of the Mind-Only school. But this is not well investigated. If one does not accept the basis of all as truly established, what harm does it do to the Madhyamika's tenet if one accepts it nominally? What should not be accepted nominally are things like the universal, permanent, and single, which are harmed by the measure that examines nominalities. If one does not accept what is refuted by the reasoning of the ultimate sense, then one must also accept that the aggregates, elements, and sense bases are completely non-existent. Therefore, in the texts of the Consequentialists, the basis of all is refuted in the ultimate sense, but not refuted nominally, and its arrangement is made, but it is not established either. Similarly, some say that accepting self-awareness nominally is due to the force of being accustomed to the imprints of conceptualization, and should not be accepted. This is also not right, because self-awareness and the basis of all are not needed to determine the ultimate sense, but they are indispensable for examining the arrangement of nominalities, and if it is established by the measure that examines nominalities, then there is no reason to refute it by saying that it does not exist nominally. If you ask, what reason is there not to? Haven't you seen how much is said in the texts of Chandrakirti, Dignāga, Śāntarakṣita, and others? Then that is also the same for meaning-awareness. If you say it is not the same, because meaning-awareness is not refuted nominally, then how can you refute nominally the happiness and so on that you yourself experience? You cannot refute it. Therefore, you should know that if you believe that the mind is truly established, then self-awareness is not reasonable, but if you believe that the mind is not truly established, then the term 'self-awareness' is very reasonable.
