If you wonder why you can't see, then the Protector of the Three Realms, the Buddha Bhagavan, also said that the mind cannot see the mind. For example, the edge of a sword cannot cut itself, the tip of a finger cannot touch itself, and a strong man cannot ride on his own shoulders, in the same way, the mind cannot see itself. As it is said, in the 'Jewel in the Crown Sutra': Just like, for example, the edge of a sword cannot cut the edge of the sword itself, and the tip of a finger cannot touch the tip of the finger itself, in the same way, the mind itself cannot see the mind itself. The key point here is: in any case, as long as the mind is truly established, then the truly established mind, on a single indivisible mind, the establishment of both the seer and the seen will disappear. When it appears as an object, that is not itself, and when it does not appear, it should not become the object to be grasped, therefore, from the ultimate truth, self-awareness is also just a designation, not the truth. The Mind-Only School says: Why can't one self-aware oneself? For example, the lamp that makes the vase etc. appear does not depend on other conditions that make it appear, but makes itself appear by itself. If you say so, the lamp makes itself appear by itself, this is also just a nominal term, not the truth, because if the lamp is not obscured by darkness, then how can the lamp make it appear? If there is no object to be revealed, but it becomes the revealer, then the lamp should also become the revealer of the sun, moon, etc., but they do not admit this. Furthermore, if the lamp itself acts on itself, then darkness should also obscure itself, in this way, obscuring the darkness that obstructs the seeing of vases etc., and not appearing, then the vases etc. should appear. Also, they think like this: even if there is no object to be revealed and no revealer, there is revelation in the manner of its own nature, for example, blue beryl is definitely blue by its own nature, it is not like white crystal becoming blue, depending on the cloth etc. underneath. Therefore, just like blue beryl, which is blue itself without dependence, and crystal, which is blue depending on others, there are these two situations, similarly, the object to be revealed and the revealer themselves are also like mutually dependent form and eye consciousness, the object to be revealed and the revealer

If it is said that self-awareness, which is clear by its own nature even without depending on each other, can also be seen. This is not established, for example, the blueness of lapis lazuli is not blue without depending on others, but the aggregation of causes and conditions that make it appear blue is caused by others. It is impossible for oneself to make oneself blue from not being blue before without depending on any other causes and conditions. As long as it is not blue, its nature will lose its blueness. If it is blue, then it must be that other causes have preceded it. It is impossible for blue itself to make itself blue again. The meaning is also not established, if it is said that "a lamp illuminates itself," this is understood and expressed by a knowledge of meaning other than the lamp. Then, what knowledge is used to understand and say the phrase "mind illuminates itself"? Is the one who understands that knowledge illuminates itself knowledge itself? Or is it another knowledge? The first is unreasonable, because this is the issue being discussed, so it is not established. If another knowledge other than knowledge is needed to understand it, it will become infinite and impossible to understand. If the times are not synchronized, it will be impossible to understand things that have ceased and have not yet arisen. If the times are synchronized, it is impossible to understand because they do not depend on each other. Therefore, when it is functioning, the other independent consciousness is not seen by itself, nor can it be seen by others other than itself. Therefore, it is meaningless to discuss whether it is clear or unclear. Establishing the Dharma of distinction on a basis that has never been seen is like describing the posture and gait of a widow's daughter's body as being like this. Furthermore, after the Mind-Only proponents were unable to establish truth through direct perception, they again established the existence of self-awareness through inference. If knowledge cannot experience itself, or does not have self-awareness, then if it has not been experienced before, it is impossible for memory to arise later, just like a result without a cause. Therefore, just as there is memory of previously experiencing objects such as blue, how can it be established that the consciousness that now has the object of experiencing objects such as blue also has memory? The memory of grasping blue consciousness now is not a sign of the fruit of the previous grasping blue consciousness experiencing itself, but other experiencing objects such as blue and the object
