I am still like a person who fears snakes, even though I haven't caught one, my heart is still filled with anxiety. Like contemplating, "Is the head 'me'? Is the hand 'me'?" Even though I know it's not, I still search throughout the body, and even if I can't find 'me,' I won't develop a definitive understanding of selflessness. This is because the investigation hasn't grasped the essential point. Regarding this, it's like lighting a lamp in a dark room, illuminating everything, and then determining that the snake previously seen is actually a rope, thereby understanding that there is no snake here, just mistaking the rope for a snake. Thus, the clinging to the snake naturally subsides. If one can determine that the 'self' clung to in the five aggregates is merely a designation, thereby cutting off the suspense of doubt, then through continuous familiarization, one will directly see selflessness. The second part is: Refuting the view that there is a 'self,' and refuting the view that the 'self' is material. The first part: The Samkhya school says that all knowable things exist in twenty-five principles. Among them, the 'self' is the Purusha with wisdom, the enjoyer of all changes or the one who experiences, but not the creator, it is a permanent entity, without the three Gunas (Guna: Sattva, Rajas, Tamas), without action. All its objects of enjoyment come from Prakriti, when the three Gunas of Rajas (activity), Sattva (pleasure), Tamas (inertia) are balanced, it is called Prakriti, which is the cause of producing twenty-three changes, just like clay is the cause of a pot. From Prakriti arises 'Buddhi' or 'Mahat,' which is like a double-sided mirror, outside it manifests the five Tanmatras, and inside it manifests Purusha, it is like a bridge connecting the two. Due to enjoying the objects, ego arises, and there are also three types of ego, namely Vaikarika (changeable) ego, Taijasa (radiant) ego, and Bhutadi (dark) ego, which are determined by the Gunas. From the first ego arise the five Tanmatras of sound, touch, form, taste, and smell, and from these Gunas arise the five great elements of earth, water, fire, wind, and space. From the Taijasa ego arise the five sense organs such as the eyes, and the five action organs of speech, hands, feet, excretion, and reproduction, as well as the common mind organ, a total of eleven. The Bhutadi ego is the helper of the previous two. Therefore, Prakriti is the only Prakriti, as well as Mahat, ego, and the five Tanmatras, a total of seven.

It is both nature and transformation, and the remaining sixteen are only transformation, and Purusha is neither nature nor transformation, these are four aspects. Purusha is consciousness, others are matter, and both Pradhana and Purusha are eternal. Thus, happiness and so on are the nature of external matter, although they are not in the essence of inner consciousness, they appear in Buddhi or Mahat and exist, and when the self enjoys them, because it cannot distinguish the self from consciousness, it is merely considered as the self. Therefore, this school considers the self to be consciousness, while the Vaisheshika school and others consider the self to be matter, and if these two are negated, everything else will also be negated, so in order to negate it, first, according to the Samkhya school's view, the eternal self, which is the nature of consciousness, does not exist. If the consciousness that apprehends sound is eternal, then it would apprehend sound at all times, because the consciousness at the time of apprehending sound is considered to be eternal. Someone might say that the reason why sound is not apprehended at all times is not because consciousness is not eternal, but because the object sound is not present in the object now. If the object of knowledge, such as sound, does not exist, then what would the subject know or understand? And for what reason would it be said that it is knowing this or that object? If even without grasping or knowing that object, it is thought and established as knowing that object, then trees should also become consciousnesses that know sounds and so on, because even without knowing the object, it is consciousness. Therefore, it can be determined that if the object of knowledge itself does not exist in the object, then its subject consciousness does not exist, because consciousness depends on whatever object it knows, and it is impossible to be consciousness even without knowing the object. Therefore, just as there is no object sound, the subject consciousness of sound that arises from sound also does not exist now because the cause has disappeared. Similarly, the momentary subject of sound is also different, so it is impossible for consciousness to remain in the second moment. Someone might say that that fault does not exist, because the consciousness that previously knew sound later knows other things such as form, so even if consciousness is eternal, it is only the difference of focusing on different objects. If the previous sound consciousness itself is eternal, then why is sound not heard when seeing form and so on?
