In short, secondly, to establish the selflessness of the path through reasoning. There are two functions: reality and the realization of emptiness. The first has two types: the selflessness of persons and the selflessness of phenomena. The first involves refuting the innate self and refuting the imputed self. Having refuted it in this way, disputes are dispelled. First, the self that is the object of this fearful view, which, based on these five aggregates of the continuum, grasps 'I' without examination or analysis, if it exists, must exist within these five aggregates. Since it is not accepted that there is a self other than these, here, with wisdom, one examines how that self is established. Thirty-two teeth, twenty-one thousand hairs, twenty nails, three hundred and sixty bones, and the body's blood and mucus, and phlegm, that is, the liquid element that exists in the form of foam in the stomach, etc., and pus in the form of serum and putrid blood, and fat in the form of grease inside and outside the body, and the body's sweat, and the lungs, liver, and heart, and other internal organs, and external excrement, and urine, flesh, and skin, and the body's heat, and the air element of the body's internal and external breath, and the ears and other orifices are not the self, because they are made up of many scattered particles and are impermanent, so their collection or parts are not the self. As it says in the Ornament of the Sutras: 'It is not in a bad place, because the characteristics do not match.' Similarly, the six elements of consciousness, such as the eye, are not the self, because they are many and impermanent. Therefore, the earth and water elements from the teeth to the skin, and the fire element of heat and the air element, and the orifice space element, and the consciousness element, these six elements are combined and labeled as 'person,' and are clung to, but 'I' does not exist as a substance. For example, in a dark and unclear situation, because the eyes are not clear, a speckled rope is seen as a snake, and the thought of grasping a snake arises, and it will not change unless it depends on other factors. Similarly, the rope is like the aggregates, the darkness and unclear eyes are like the confused causes of ignorance, and grasping the snake is like grasping the self. There, in the darkness, one touches with one's hand searching for the snake, but the hand and the snake do not meet.
