Even if it is not established from the beginning, it is heard from the lineage of trustworthy lamas, appears in the Vinaya, enters the Sutra, and does not contradict the Dharma nature of the Abhidharma (Shastra), and is proven by reason to be the correct guiding scripture. By what cause is the Hinayana established by trusting the words of the Buddha? If you ask that, then such a trustworthy cause is equally present in the Mahayana. If you are wise and impartial, it is close to being established. Therefore, this can be established for both of us, teacher and student, and it is not impossible to establish. Apart from that, if whatever is desired by any person, or after it has been established and promised in front of that person, that scripture is true, then the Vedas etc. will also become true, because those who acknowledge it are not only one person, but many people consider it to be the correct scripture. If you say that the Hinayana is the Buddha's word, there is no dispute, but the Mahayana has disputes, so it is not the Buddha's word. Just because there is a dispute, it does not become an incorrect scripture. If that were the case, then the heretics would have disputes with the entire Buddhist scripture, and the various parts of the scripture would be held, and the various sects and the eighteen Sravaka schools etc. would argue with each other internally, so the Hinayana would also be abandoned by you. Furthermore, the root of the doctrine, that is, what the existence of the doctrine depends on, is the true Bhikshu, but the Bhikshu himself is also difficult to exist and difficult to obtain. In this regard, there are five distinctions of Bhikshu expressed in words, namely: the Bhikshu in name, the self-proclaimed Bhikshu, the Bhikshu of begging behavior, the fully ordained Bhikshu, and the Bhikshu who has abandoned afflictions. Among them, the first three are just names, and the latter two are superior, so these two are the root of the doctrine. And among them, the most ultimate Bhikshu is the Bhikshu who has abandoned afflictions, but that is difficult to exist, because the cause of abandoning afflictions—seeing the truth—is impossible, because they believe that it does not possess the emptiness of Dharma nature. In addition, for the fully ordained Bhikshu, there are also disputes such as the disagreement of opinions of various schools, which has been hinted at earlier. Someone asks: Why is there no Bhikshu who has abandoned afflictions? Because it is emptiness.

If someone thinks that even without realizing emptiness, one can see the Four Noble Truths. To this, the inconceivable nature of the Four Noble Truths, etc., is not the main point. The main thing on the path is the direct antidote that eradicates afflictions from the root, which is the wisdom that realizes selflessness. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "Our [cognition] also arises from conditions, that is dependent on the view of selflessness, liberation is attained through the view of emptiness, the remaining meditation is for that purpose." Thus it is said. Therefore, it is difficult to attain nirvana by abandoning emptiness and with minds that have objects of focus, because if self-grasping is not uprooted, there is no way to abandon afflictions. And to uproot it, as it is said: "If one sees selflessness in objects, then the seeds of existence will cease." Thus, only by seeing objects as empty is there no other way to fundamentally reverse it. If the habitual tendencies of clinging to objects as real are not abandoned, even if temporarily suppressed by meditation, etc., they will arise again, like the absorption of non-discrimination, it will be explained in this way. As it is also said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "The qualities and faults are interconnected, the abandonment of desire and hatred, etc., because they have not seen the objects, by what external appearance can it not be?" Thus it is said. Therefore, from realizing the truth of emptiness, which is the object of clinging of innate self-grasping, that is, the absence of inherent existence, one can abandon afflictions, otherwise, it is not reasonable. To this, they say: Although we think that selflessness must be realized, it is different from emptiness in meaning, emptiness is the imputation of non-existence to phenomena such as form, etc., which are truly existent, it is a terrifying view. And to know that the self of sentient beings does not exist from the beginning, to know that it does not exist, is a correct view that accords with reality. If this is said, then there is no difference between these two in emptiness. The self of sentient beings is merely imputed in dependence on the aggregates, this has no inherent existence, which is the selflessness of sentient beings. And the body and vase, etc., which are imputed in dependence on the collection of limbs, etc., are also empty of their own essence, which is the selflessness of phenomena. Therefore, these two are merely different in the basis of emptiness, the phenomena. The selflessness of phenomena is the antidote to all phenomena, the selflessness of sentient beings is the antidote to the cause of samsara, therefore it is merely stated separately, but the nature of emptiness
