I constantly show. Villagers and village chiefs are transformed by words. Likewise, captains, merchants, and householders are transformed. Kings, ministers, guides, messengers, doctors, worldly treatises, and ritual performers—these become great trees in monasteries. Medicine and inexhaustible treasures, wish-fulfilling jewels, wish-granting trees, and for those who are lost and doubtful, they become guides. They know soon after the world arises, but do not understand the ways of beings' actions. To all of these, they teach the methods of cultivation, trade, and various crafts, speaking of the world. Whatever harmless and non-harmful actions bring happiness to beings are praised by the wise. Wisdom, medicine, and various treatises—all of these are greatly proclaimed by those righteous sages. As exemplified by these words, it is spoken in many sutras. Also, in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara (Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life): 'There is nothing that the sons of the Buddhas do not study.' And so on. From many commentaries on the Buddha's teachings, it is known that all that is knowable should be studied. In particular, divination is spoken of in many tantras. For example, in the Mantra Chapter of the Hevajra Tantra, it says that by reciting the mantra 'oṃ na gra na gra (藏文:ཨོཾ་ན་གྲྭ་ན་གྲྭ,梵文天城体:ओँ न ग्र न ग्र,梵文罗马拟音:oṃ na gra na gra,汉语字面意思:嗡,那,札,那,札)' and performing divination on the thumb, one can know who took the substance, etc. Also, in the tantra called 'The Glorious Union of All Buddhas, the Supreme Bliss of the Illusion of Dakinis,' it says: 'Sword, mirror, bow and arrow, wood, water, flowing water, rock, in houses where images appear, what should be done and what should not be done, what is lost and what is not lost, what is stolen and what is not stolen, likewise, what is found and what is not found, who is alive and who is dead, likewise, victory and defeat, meaningful and meaningless, likewise, accomplished and unaccomplished, happiness and unhappiness, like the rituals, the affairs of the realms of the gods and the affairs of the Buddhafields, in all times and places, all thoughts are seen and heard.' And so on. Also, in the Laghusamvara Tantra, it says: 'Likewise, reciting mantras, on the sword, water, thumb, lamp, mirror, the mantra practitioner himself is always in yoga, and Prasena is made to descend.' Also, in the Manjushri One Hero Accomplishment Tantra, it says: 'The son of the gods, the immaculate one, and the goddess Cunda Shrava.'

Ṭa. Examples include the various rituals for accomplishing clairvoyance, divination, and dreams through means such as eating meat and whispering in the ear. In most Kriyā and Anuttarayoga Tantras, the accomplishment of divination is repeatedly mentioned as the main focus of minor activities. These also depend on various substances, mantras, and samādhis. Furthermore, relying on the wisdom deity is similar to invoking wisdom. As stated in the Kālacakra, when wisdom descends, 'by the descent of the mind, one will know those who dwell in the hearts of others, and all that has occurred and will occur.' Similar statements are made. In the Guhyasamāja, it is also said, 'A girl of twelve years, or a boy of twelve years, with all characteristics fully complete, having seized them, thoroughly examine the descent. Having performed all the rituals, thoroughly accomplish the activities.' These statements have the same meaning. In the Āryabhadrapāla-paripṛcchā-sūtra, it says, 'Thumb, mirror, sword, water and crystal, butter lamp, earth, iron and sky, begging bowl, jewel, and blazing fire, in these, clear visions will strongly arise.' From this to 'The mantra practitioner will not be changed by afflictions for a long time,' it is clearly shown. Furthermore, from the Kālacakra and other texts, one can see methods for finding underground treasures, and from the Guhyasamāja, one can see rituals for subduing Vajra Añjana, and so on. There are also invisibility, eye medicine, pacification, increase, wrathful activities, breathing techniques, seeing with the eyes, accomplishing clairvoyance of the ear, eye, and mind, as well as dreams, and rituals for divination using water, fire, mirrors, fingernails, thumbs, swords, butter lamps, and so on. There are very many minor activities. In the Sutras, and especially in the precious Tantras, all those teachings that rely on different magical wheels of deities, mantras, substances, and samādhi should not be criticized, as they are the special words of the Buddha. Regarding these instructions, such as the Cunda Divination Descent Treatise by the master Nāgārjuna, and many texts composed by Indian and Tibetan scholars, these are just brief explanations of how the teachings are presented in the scriptures. If analyzed with reason, divination is not contradictory to the path of omniscience, because it relies on a supreme deity, as well as substances, mantras, and samādhi.
