Also, one should be skilled in methods such as refuting the arrogance of opponents through debate. Therefore, to briefly discuss how to determine definitions, etc.: Whatever is a term of sound consciousness that represents a reasoned object, such as a vase, etc., and the difference in meaning to which these things are applied, is the reason for establishing it as a vase, etc. Therefore, if "bloated belly" is taken as the definition of a vase, that is the method of establishing a vase. And like the function of "being able to support," that is not its definition. Similarly, if one grasps the bare essence of the definition itself without confusing it with the base-opposite and self-opposite, and it is without error, then one can be free from the three possibilities of "non-pervasion," "over-pervasion," and "impossibility," or possess the three conditions of "non-possession," "other-possession," and "impossible to cut off." At that time, when the relationship between the definition and the defined object is determined, one can, by the power of the determination of meaning, completely and without omission determine all aspects. Even without many elaborations of words, grasping the key point is sufficient. For example, saying "cut a tree" can, through the determination of meaning, be understood as cutting down the tree in front of you, without needing to state all the non-confused aspects of the type of tree and its location, time, and nature. If one cannot understand the relationship between the definition and the defined object, then merely increasing words on the statement of the definition will be difficult to be effective. For example, looking at a gem, crystal, and vala, someone asks, "Is this Indranila (梵文,Indranila,梵文罗马拟音,Indranīla,字面意思:因陀罗蓝)?" Another person says, "No, Indranila is blue." That person, judging only by the words, asks, "Then is blue cloth also Indranila?" The answer is, "No, it is a blue gem." Again, he asks, "Then is lapis lazuli also it?" The answer is, "No, Indranila is cheaper than that." Again, he asks, "Then is blue crystal it?" The answer is, "No, it is more precious than ordinary crystal." Like this, no matter how one says it, one cannot fully state the unique properties of Indranila and thus recognize it, which is like describing an elephant to a blind person. When saying "blue," if one can understand the connection between the blue property on the object and Indranila, one can, like immediately cutting off superimposition, grasp the key point of the definition, thereby indirectly determining all unique qualities.

Being able to prevent other additions is like when life ceases, other senses also cease, so one should be skilled in grasping the essential points. In all circumstances, it is important to focus on a pure understanding that distinguishes through meaning. For example, when saying "vase," even if a bulging shape appears in the mind, it is unlikely to mistake it for all other bulging things. Therefore, on what basis is the defined object, such as a vase, established by that definition? If one does not specifically designate any particular instance of the defined object, such as a golden vase, the forms of the defined object and the basis of definition, sound and meaning, will not appear different, and one will not be able to grasp the difference in the basis. If the basis of definition is a golden vase, then it must become the support for both definition and defined object, although it is universally true that it is both bulging and a vase. However, this is not necessary for the basis of imputation. For example, the mouth, belly, bottom parts, and material particles of a vase are the basis of imputation for the vase, but each of them does not necessarily have to be a vase. However, in the case of the basis of definition, for those who see the meaning of a vase but do not understand the term, it is like correctly applying the symbol to establish the term. Both the golden vase and the vase agree in sound and mind in the mere exclusion of 'vase.' At that time, it is easy to grasp the function of the golden bulge, the shrunken bottom, and the water-holding capacity as the basis of definition. All similar things can be explained by this. For example, grasping the function of being able to support the eastern roof beam as the basis of definition for a pillar. For the basis of definition of impermanence, such as sound, it is sufficient to leave it as it is because the names are different. The secret words of logic should be learned elsewhere. Thus, what is called conventional is that which is shown through the way of distinction, possessing three characteristics, appearing unerringly and undeniably before the valid cognition of nominalists, yet without the slightest establishment of inherent truth. Its appearing aspect is conventional, its empty aspect is ultimate, thus it has the characteristic of dependent arising. As the noble Nagarjuna said: Whatever arises dependently, I say that is emptiness. That is also a provisional designation, and that is also the Middle Way. Secondly, by what cause does it appear? Things that are pleasing without examination, rely on the preceding self-cause, and the subsequent results of the subsequent will arise in the same way.
