Generally speaking, what needs to be understood is that, when distinguished in detail, there are two types of distinctions: those of sound and those of meaning. In this way, all sounds have the nature of excluding others. Therefore, by the power of excluding what is not its referent, the sound makes the essence of the referent appear to be a completely determined understanding. Not to mention meaningful expressions. Even in expressions that do not conform to meaning, such as saying "rabbit's horn," if there is no element of excluding what is not a rabbit and what is not a horn, thereby establishing the essence of the referent, then no auditory consciousness of that object will arise. If this consciousness does not arise, then the auditory consciousness that holds it to be completely non-existent is also impossible. Even so, apart from the mere power of sound projecting consciousness onto the object, for the essence of the rabbit's horn, since there is no other element that can be established through two exclusions, it does not even have a name in meaning. For the distinction of meaning, there are two situations established through complete determination and distinction. That is, non-things are merely based on distinguishing things. Although it seems that, relying on excluding what is to be negated, its essence seems to be completely determined in name, in meaning, there is no situation where one's own essence becomes completely determined, except by the power of distinction. Things are established through the power of their own essence being completely determined, excluding all that is not themselves, thereby being established through two exclusions. However, mainly through the power of complete determination, distinction will naturally be established. Therefore, if the distinction between sound and meaning is not distinguished, the difference between the existence and non-existence of the object referred to by the name cannot be distinguished. If the difference between whether the essence of meaning is established through distinction or through complete determination is not distinguished, the difference between things and non-things cannot be distinguished. Therefore, this method of distinguishing between the two is very important. Therefore, when establishing any differentiating attribute on a particular basis, there are two ways to establish it: one is to exclude that the attribute does not belong to that basis, thereby establishing that it belongs to that basis; the other is to exclude that it belongs to other things, thereby establishing that it belongs only to that basis. If applied to definitions, there are also two ways in which it exists on the basis: one is to exclude situations where it is completely impossible, such as in the definition of understanding, excluding the situation of being composed of particles, thereby establishing the situation that it may exist, which is called excluding impossible distinctions; the other is in the

The characteristic of merely knowing what does not pervade other aspects is like the arrangement of object consciousness arising from reliance on the eye faculty. By cutting off the characteristics that do not possess all aspects of the basis, arranging what has become all-pervasive is called "non-possessive exclusion." For the characteristic of knowing that pervades the basis but also excessively pervades other phenomena that one does not intend to represent, like arranging what can be made an object of consciousness. By cutting off what possesses other aspects, arranging what has become possessed only by that, is called "other-possessive exclusion." Therefore, the characteristic of abandoning the three faults by means of the three types of exclusion is considered faultless. Thus, all proofs of characteristics on a characteristic-basis either possess only that characteristic or also possess others, that is, they prove according to the meaning one wishes to express by way of the two types of exclusion. Therefore, for any basis, how many distinctive qualities exist, can be divided and excluded from the opposite perspective. The nature of cutting off all that is not oneself is the same as total exclusion. Also, if one divides into characteristic-basis and characteristic-quality, then it will become the opposite of merely the blue characteristic-basis, and the opposite of the characteristic-qualities such as made and impermanent on top of blue. If one divides into name, signified, and basis, then the opposites of these three are known as meaning-opposite, self-opposite, and basis-opposite, and so on. In short, all opposites are established from the aspect of cutting off or eliminating what is other than that. Here, the manner of the two cuts is shown very clearly. If it is conventional, then the above three qualities must be fully present on one basis in an inseparable manner. Some say that this is not reasonable. If it were reasonable, then the object of unpleasant feeling, unexamined, would be pleasant, because it is conventional. It cannot be accepted, because it is unpleasant. If one says so, then the happiness of existence of Brahma, Indra, and the Wheel-Turning King should be suffering, because all contaminated things are of the nature of suffering. It cannot be accepted, because it is happiness. There are many other such examples. If one understands one, the other is also understood. Others also say that emptiness, which is merely the negation of existence, should be momentary, because it is conventional. The reason is established, because in the auto-commentary it says: What is called conventional is dependent on the wisdom of conceptual thought, therefore non-arising and so on are conventional.
