Just as piercing a pile quickly with a needle, moments arise sequentially. It is impossible for them to arise in a disordered manner. Even if one moment within them is incomplete, it is impossible for the duration of stay to be shortened by that number. If the object of the first and second moments is the same, then the second moment becomes meaningless, just like the first moment alone. If it does not move from that first moment and does not perish, then eventual change is also impossible. In short, one cannot identify anything other than what is identified in the first moment, otherwise, the difference between old and new, previously existing and currently existing, whether or not it becomes the object of someone's senses, and whether or not actions are performed, will become indistinguishable. If it is not like that, then it is certain that the later state arises from the destruction of the former. For example, even for something like a vase, if the vase is the same when there is no water and when there is water, then it must be that there is water even when there is no water, which is impossible, so it should be understood that the vase when there was no water has ceased. If it does not cease, then there is no possibility for water to arise. Similarly, since the later moment does not arise if the former moment does not cease, all phenomena that appear to be functional are propelled by a single cause for their own arising and ceasing, and it should be understood that cessation does not require another cause. Although they arise and cease in moments, the continuous occurrence of similarity is taken as the cause of delusion and clung to as one. For example, thinking, "Last year I crossed this river, and I will cross it again next year," although one thinks that the river of last year, this year, and next year is the same and permanent, if one examines it, not to mention last year and next year, there is not even a trace of dew in the place of this morning's water, but a new water has arisen. Therefore, thinking that something like a vase is destroyed by a hammer is merely saying that the continuous arising of the future moments of the vase has been prevented, so it is said that the vase has been broken, but in reality, it is not the cause of the vase's destruction. If one examines whether the hammer is the hammer itself, or a shard, or something else, it is impossible for it to do it itself. The proximate cause of the vase and the hammer together act as a co-arising condition to produce shards, but the shards

Having done it, what kind of pot was broken? If it is thought that a single hammer completely destroys the pot and simultaneously produces the two things of tiles, then, both things and non-things cannot be the object of action. Moreover, doing something other than tiles will not destroy the pot, just as doing a pillar will not destroy the pot. If it is thought that the hammer breaks the pot, and the tiles arise naturally like ashes from a fire, then the potter will also become destroying the clay instead of making pots, etc., which is too extreme. Therefore, whoever says that destruction is caused by a non-thing cause, actually admits that the cause does nothing. It is like saying "to regard as non-existent" and "there is nothing to see" are the same in meaning. Second, the reason for harm is: Some say that although most crows are black, there may be white ones, similarly, although most things are impermanent, some things such as Ishvara are permanent. If any permanent thing, whether sequentially or simultaneously, is empty of being able to perform a function, then it is necessarily not a thing, like space. Ishvara, if permanent, is also empty of performing a function. Because anything that performs a function must be gradual and momentary. Change is not appropriate for permanence, therefore it is empty of performing a function, and anything that is empty of performing a function is impossible to be a thing. In short, if it is permanent, it is impossible to be a thing; if it is a thing, it is impossible to be permanent. It should be known that the common basis of these two does not exist in knowable things. In this way, a permanent thing is impossible, and any existing thing, its destruction does not depend on other causes. Therefore, it should be known that in any scope of knowable things, there is no permanent thing. Anything that cannot perform a function, such as space, etc., is actually non-existent, they are merely fabrications on the part of excluding other things. Taking space, etc., as examples of permanence is merely placing them as non-impermanent things, but nothing exists as the nature of permanence. Understanding the meaning of arising itself as destruction in this way is extremely important in the measure of convention. Relying on this, one can understand without error the classification of actions, causes and effects, and the reality of conventions. One can prevent attachment to existence and inverted thoughts such as permanent things. Thing
