If nothing appears, there is no image. If an image appears, then that itself is the image, and it is also consciousness. It cannot be said that it is not consciousness. If it is not consciousness, then just like the color of a barren woman's son, which is beyond the scope of consciousness, no consciousness can become an object, which is generally the case. Therefore, whatever is experienced very clearly like this is false, and whatever is not experienced is true. What good is there in saying this? There is none. In short, consciousness and image are merely distinguished by looking at them from different perspectives. In reality, it is impossible to determine whether there is a difference between them or not. Because the so-called image is merely the clear and distinct aspect of consciousness perceiving various objects, and there is no other distinction apart from that. Therefore, an independent consciousness that is different from the entity of the image is impossible in any way. Therefore, it is very important to distinguish and carefully consider how this fault of non-existence and non-appearance enters. Otherwise, some people merely grasp onto selflessness and then remain there without any basis, and eventually they will also say self-contradictory things similar to themselves. These people are far from the subtle Middle Way. Therefore, the characteristic of the Mind-Only school is that it considers everything to be a true phenomenon, so this view of true phenomena is stable. And it considers everything to be a false phenomenon, and external objects are not real in the mind either, so it is close to the emptiness of truth, similar to being combined with the Middle Way. Therefore, even if this view is placed in a higher position in order, it will cause great unreasonableness in conventional terms, so it should only be acknowledged that conventional terms are true phenomena. In this way, if the fundamental points are grasped, then the subsequent refutations can also be easily understood in the same way. Second, the detailed explanation is that it is unreasonable for there to be no image, and it is unreasonable to grasp a single image. First, it is unreasonable to analyze the way of knowing objects; it is unreasonable to analyze the relationship; it is unreasonable to analyze the cause. First, there are two types: general and specific. First, like this, where there is no thing, there is no knowledge of it. Just like there is no happiness in things that are not happiness, and there is no whiteness in things that are not white. It is said that, like this, in the object divided into object and subject, if something does not exist, then the consciousness of the subject cannot know that non-existent thing, because that is its own power. For example, suffering that is not happiness

Some, through words like "happiness," cannot understand happiness as suffering; similarly, for white things, one cannot understand non-white things as black—this is a general explanation. Second, specifically, direct knowing is unreasonable, and mere imputation is also unreasonable. First, for this appearance, the meaning of knowing is not actually reasonable, because it is separate from the nature of knowing, like flowers in the sky, etc. It is said that for knowing, the way of knowing an object is either direct knowing or knowing through imputation, and it is impossible to go beyond these two. Direct knowing refers to the nature that is different from the material nature of consciousness, appearing clearly in the appearance of any object, and giving rise to awareness, which is called direct awareness. According to the view of those who speak of meaning, even if an object like a vase is not directly known, the power of the external object gives rise to a consciousness that appears similar to it, and this is called knowing the object. However, for the school of non-appearance, neither of these two is possible. First, like this, for the clear and obvious experience of appearances such as blue and yellow, it is not actually reasonable to think that the meaning of directly recognizing and knowing, saying, "This is this, this is that," is reasonable. Because direct knowing must know in a way that is identical to the nature of knowing, and according to your view, you admit that appearance is not consciousness, so since it is separate from the nature of knowing, how can it ever be directly experienced? For example, just as it is impossible to directly experience the colors of flowers in the sky and the son of a barren woman, etc. Second, it is also impossible to experience by mere imputation, because non-existent things have no power. Imputation is also not possible, like a horse's horn. Non-existent things, giving rise to self-appearing consciousness, are not capable. If any dharma exists, even if you think it is not directly experienced, it is acceptable, because the object-nature of the appearance-producer has the power to generate the appearing consciousness, so it can be said that consciousness arises in the same way as the object, and therefore it can be said that that object is seen or known. But for non-existent things, since they do not have the power to generate self-appearing consciousness, it is not possible to say that this or that is experienced or known by mere imputation, like a horse's horn. That is, a horse's horn does not have the power to generate the consciousness of its own appearance, so it is impossible to have a self-grasping consciousness that says, "Its appearance is like this."
