Those who follow various external appearances, such as the Hearers who assert subtle particles, and the Vaisheshika school who assert substance and qualities, whether their views are superior or not, must refute their unreasonable statements. That is, to prove that external objects do not exist, or to prevent the view that the grasper and the grasped are different entities. The Mind-Only school calls this "the reasoning that prevents similarity from arising." That is, if it is believed that the appearance of manifestation arises from an external object and is similar to it, then refuting this view with unreasonable reasoning is called "the reasoning that prevents similarity from arising." Although many kinds of reasoning are mentioned in the Compendium of Vehicles and so on, the main point is that the existence of an external object that arises merely because of similarity cannot be established. Just as the appearance of two moons, etc., shows its uncertainty. Moreover, neither coarse nor subtle external objects can be established. Indivisible subtle particles cannot be directly perceived in the field of sense consciousness. Because the coarse cannot be established, it is argued that external objects do not exist. The key to proving that the grasper and the grasped are not different entities lies in the reason that all appearances arise as the nature of clear awareness, and in proving it with simultaneous determination. For example, the blue object and the consciousness that perceives blue are both perceived simultaneously by valid cognition. Moreover, this is not occasional, but constant, universal, or definite. Like this: the blue object and the mind that perceives blue, subject, are not different entities, because they are definitely perceived simultaneously. Like the appearance of two moons. This is how it is recorded. If simultaneous determination is definitely perceived, why must it be the same entity? If it is not the same entity, it must be a different entity. And different entities cannot have that characteristic, just like blue and yellow, etc. Although some different entities are sometimes perceived simultaneously, if one is always perceived, the universality that the other is also definitely perceived simultaneously with it is uncertain. It is impossible for the blue and the consciousness that perceives blue to be perceived independently without one of them being perceived. If the two are different entities, then it is possible that they may sometimes be perceived separately. In this case, if we explain in detail how to avoid the three faults such as non-establishment in this argument, it will be helpful for understanding, but here only the fundamental points are indicated.

No. In short, the ultimate destination and conclusion of all the reasoning that establishes simultaneous appearance, etc., as one entity of grasping and the grasped is: if the appearance is consciousness, then it must be consciousness; if it is not consciousness, then one cannot experience it oneself. Grasping this one key point will lead to a conclusion from hundreds of reasonings such as simultaneous appearance. Therefore, in this treatise, it is said, "What is established by oneself," and it is limited to this, so it will be explained here. In this way, one's own consciousness, which is merely clear awareness and does not fall into the aspects of individual active consciousnesses, is designated as the alaya consciousness, which is the basis of habit. Its essence is neutral, merely knowing the meaning of the object, arising and ceasing momentarily in a continuous stream, possessing the five pervasive mental factors such as touch, having an unclear object, and focusing on the vast container and its contents. It is divided into two parts: the aspect of fruition and the aspect of seeds. The reason why their essence, retinue, object, etc., are like this is that if one grasps the key point of the consciousness that does not fall into the aspects of individual active consciousnesses, which is merely the essence of clear awareness, one can easily understand all the characteristics of the alaya. If one separately explains and thinks about the alaya, saying that the object and essence are like this, it will be difficult to grasp the key point even if one examines it for countless eons. The detailed classification of these should be learned from other treatises. Like this, the alaya consciousness is like a great ocean, from which the power or habit of the seven aggregates and their retinue arise and cease like waves. In short, the ability to generate its own subsequent result, which is established in the alaya, exists as a seed when it is immature, and when it is mature, it appears as various bodies, places, and enjoyments. Even without an object, one experiences various appearances due to the habit of familiarity, just like the consciousness in dreams and the familiar thoughts of unpleasantness, etc. If one does not consider appearance to be mind, then one must acknowledge the alaya, because the active consciousnesses all fall into their respective aspects, so they cannot each serve as the basis for all internal and external objects, places, bodies, and enjoyments, and the various appearances are merely mind, and this mind is everything of object, consciousness, and body.
