The reason it is called an image is because it is named based on what is seen, but it is unreasonable to think that its essence is the same as the actual object and itself. If that were the case, when looking at the north side of a mirror, the image facing south would not be seen, so the object and the image are opposite in direction. Moreover, on a small mirror, the image of one's own large face appears small, so the sizes are different. The image appears to enter the inside of the mirror, so the positions are different. Furthermore, the images of many mountains and tree branches and tops extending upwards by the shore of a clear lake will be noticed with the branches and tops pointing downwards, so the situations are inconsistent. Therefore, the consciousness that cognizes the image and the consciousness that cognizes the object have different objects. For example, just like the consciousness of sound and the consciousness of objects, their fields of use are different. It should be known that the consciousness that cognizes the image does not grasp the actual object such as one's own face. Furthermore, the Vaibhashikas say that the image is another very clear object that arises inside the mirror, etc., but that is not correct. Because objects are of the nature of particles, it is impossible for sentient beings to not hinder each other from occupying each other's positions, so they exist separately from each other. If that were not the case, but they entered the same position, then they would mix with each other without distinction, and it would have to be assumed that they became the same essence. Here, the image is cognized in that direction of the surface of the mirror, etc., and if the image is also an object, then how can two objects exist in the same position? Just as two bottles cannot exist in the position of one bottle. This argument is not uncertain with respect to wind and sun, etc., because the particles of wind and sun, etc., although mixed like dust and tsampa, exist separately from each other, and do not become one. Therefore, if the view of the Sautrantikas and Vaibhashikas, both of whom are attached to the image as an object, is not refuted, then the example possessing both the thing to be proven and the property to be proven, the statement of the image will not be established, therefore it is refuted. Furthermore, the Sutra masters, etc., who want to understand the image, say that the thing's

They say that through inconceivable power, due to conditions such as mirrors, knowledge itself merely appears in the form of an image. If it is thought that this image appears as objectless knowledge, then why not think that forms, etc., which are considered to be true, also appear as objectless? Because the appearance of both form and image is considered to be merely a form. If it is thought that the image itself is not suitable as the creator of the form, because the image itself cannot be established, so it is merely objectless knowledge, then, if it is like this, the forms, etc., which are considered to exist in the external realm as the creator of the form, also, because the subtle particles themselves cannot be established, etc., the reasoning that prevents grasping harms the object, so it will be no different from the image. Similarly, examples such as illusion, dream, mirage, city of gandharvas, and fire wheel are also said to be established in that way. Among them, Youthful Giving and others say: Illusions, etc., are not untrue, for example, is a lump of clay called an illusion? Or does it refer to the knowledge that appears in that way? If it is the former, it is form, and if it is the latter, it is knowledge, so in any case, the horses, elephants, etc. of illusion cannot be established as non-existent, similarly, because any of the forms or knowledge that are the cause of all dreams, etc. are truly existent, therefore all cannot be used as examples of untruth. That's what they say. That is not reasonable, because, like this, the appearance of illusions, etc., whether it is thought that the appearance of knowledge with aspects appears, or whether it is thought that knowledge without aspects directly perceives as an object, whichever of the two sides is the case, it will be placed on the object itself that appears in the mind. It is not merely calling its cause the appearance of illusions, etc., if it is merely placed on the cause, then the eyes, etc. are also the cause, so those will also become illusions, etc. Therefore, because the cause and the object are different, even if the cause of illusions, etc. is form and knowledge, it is not taken as an example, for example, even if a lump of clay exists, if it is not regarded as a horse, elephant, etc., it will not be called the appearance of illusion, nor will it be taken as an example, and the lump of clay itself is regarded as a horse, elephant, etc.
