If so, when establishing on the nominal phenomena of things that are without inherent existence, will the basis itself, which possesses non-inherent existence, be established like a place without a pot? Although this is establishing meaning, the bases to be established will not disappear, because of the power of beginningless clinging to reality, clinging to the things that appear as true, merely establishing non-inherent existence. Even though there is no establishment of even a particle of another dharma existing as its own entity, in the face of those who cling to reality, which is widely known in the world, based on these appearances, the terms of the subject of non-inherent existence and what is to be established are reasonable. If the appearances of external and internal things, like illusions, are taken as subjects in accordance with appearances and fame, then the terms of sound and consciousness of non-inherent existence are established through valid signs, just as the term 'cow' is applied to a collection of nodules, etc. What is certain should be repeatedly remembered, and what is uncertain should be inferred from signs, but the dharma and the subject of dharma will not become different, because not being inherently existent does not contradict appearing, this is the nature of things. The example of the former and latter is like the reflection of the moon in water. Although it is not seen in all other books to be held in any one aspect, it is important to understand in this way that the general and the particular are very well understood in this case. Third, are both the sign and the object to be negated non-affirming negations (Sanskrit: prasajyapratiṣedha, 藏文:མེད་དགག་), or affirming negations (Sanskrit: paryudāsapratiṣedha, 藏文:མ་ཡིན་དགག་)? If according to the former, since the object to be negated is merely a cutting off and there is no possibility of a relationship with a mere non-entity that does not have its own essence, what is to be established cannot become what is to be understood, and the reasoning cannot become what is to be understood. If it is an affirming negation, then why not accept the establishment of a thing that is a dharma after the object to be negated has been rejected? On this, scholars have distinguished and established many separately, but the sign is the absence of one and many, and both what is to be established and the absence of truth are non-affirming negations, although what is to be negated is merely a cutting off, the sign and what is to be established will not become unrelated, because both the cutting off of what is to be negated and the exclusion of others in the opposite are the same in the nature of selflessness, so the relationship of one entity is established. Therefore, even though those various views do a lot of hard work of refutation and establishment, if the appearance and exclusion are well distinguished, the darkness of doubt will be cleared.

However one examines it otherwise, it is difficult to obtain a true conviction. In general, it is very important for this type of reasoning to thoroughly distinguish between other instances, the three aspects, and the formulation of refutation and establishment, but here I have not written it for fear of many words, but the details should be learned from the treatises on valid cognition. The third example of something that appears but is not true is reflections and so on. In this regard, the Sutra of Meeting Father and Son says: Just as in a very pure mirror, how a reflection appears without inherent existence, you should know all phenomena in the same way. As it is said, these reflections and so on, although they appear, are not true, and worldly people also acknowledge this. Using this as an example, one understands through reasoning that all phenomena are the same. That is, when a mirror and a face become interdependent, an image of the face's form appears, and the color and shape of the object are clearly visible without being mixed. If one does not examine or analyze it, but simply leaves it as it is seen and appears, it seems as if there is no difference from the real object, but if one analyzes it, one cannot find even a tiny particle of the real object such as the face on it. Moreover, although one experiences the appearance without obstruction, if one analyzes it, the place where the image is seen, whether it is the inside, outside, or middle of the mirror, or the space between awareness and the object, or the part of the inner awareness itself, does not exist anywhere, so how can it exist elsewhere? It is not reasonable to hold on to something as existing when it has not been found. If it is acceptable to assume that something exists even if it cannot be found, then why not also assume that the child of a barren woman exists? Therefore, one should understand it as an example of something that appears but is not true. Similarly, the King of Samadhi Sutra says: Just as the moon in the water at night appears in clear and unpolluted water, the moon in the water is empty and cannot be accumulated or grasped, you should know that all phenomena are the same. So it is said. In this case, let us briefly refute some misconceptions about the example. The Vaisheshikas and others say: Seeing a reflection in this way is because one's own light shines on the surface of the mirror and is reflected back, so one sees one's own face and so on, and therefore the name reflection is given. According to their view, in terms of convention, it is form.
