Holding earth, water, fire, wind, etc., as being established in themselves; relying on things, we also use the term non-things; clinging to things and non-things as they are; and relying on our own five aggregates, we give rise to the innate view of self, clinging to "I" without examination or analysis; in this way, the nature of clinging to phenomena and persons as being established is based on the aggregates, etc. Furthermore, even though they do not exist in name, we seize upon false reasons and forcefully impute permanent and real selves, etc., with our own minds, and various concepts arise, binding children with the threads of attachment. Among these, the way in which one is negated by negating another, and whether or not they are negated, is as follows: Even if the objects of clinging to permanence and reality are negated by the reasoning that negates them, the innate self-grasping is not eliminated because it is not the basis of the innate self-grasping. However, if one knows that the object grasped by the innate self-grasping—the self—does not exist, then all imputations that consider the self to be permanent, an agent, etc., will be eliminated, just as knowing that a barren woman has no son, one can determine that the color of her son does not exist. Similarly, here, if all phenomena of persons, conditioned phenomena, and unconditioned phenomena are established as being without inherent existence through the analysis of oneness and difference in truth, how could the grasping of the two selves arise? Because all knowable objects have been determined and established as being without inherent existence. Therefore, the objects of grasping of both imputation and innate grasping are combined as the subject, not only to include the objects that appear to harmless consciousness in the world, but also to include what is imputed by outsiders, etc. Second, is the reasoning a consequence or an autonomous syllogism? Is it establishing meaning or establishing terminology? Is it negation by exclusion or negation by implication? This is to be analyzed. First, is this reasoning established as a consequence or as an autonomous syllogism? If it is the former, then the sign must be established by being accepted by the opponent, but here, the opponent has not accepted the separation of one and many, so it is unreasonable. If it is established as an autonomous syllogism, then the sign must be complete with three aspects and established by valid cognition, but here, the subject, the permanent self, the permanent lord, atoms, and indivisible consciousness are not established, so the subject is not established. If the subject is not established, then the pervasion and the determination of similar instances cannot be established, so the three aspects are not complete.

If one thinks like that, then some Tibetan and Indian scholars say that for things that other schools have not examined, it can be established by reductio ad absurdum; for things that have been examined, either method is fine. However, as explained in Madhyamaka Aloka, etc., there is no need to distinguish, and it is fine to use either reductio ad absurdum or Svatantrika. If using reductio ad absurdum, even if the opponent does not directly admit that it is one or different, if they directly admit the pervasive thing, then by establishing it through reductio ad absurdum, there is no need to rely on other reasons, and they can only admit that it is one or different. For example, if one admits that Ishvara is permanent, but admits that its results are many, then the very admission of many results can negate that Ishvara is one, and if one is negated, then many are also negated. In reality, it is the opponent's own admitted reason that establishes one or different, and admitting many establishes one or different. Similarly, this can be extended to all situations. One can also use Svatantrika, although the subject Ishvara is permanent, etc., is impossible in reality, in consciousness, merely from the opposite of Ishvara being not permanent, other exclusion can be established, and thus the name of non-reality can be established, and the clinging to Ishvara as a permanent reality in the external world will also be negated. Placing the word permanent as the subject, etc., is similar to this, it is most reasonable to refute only what is established in one's own consciousness, because merely what is held by other exclusion in one's own consciousness, and the appearance of the external world, these two, mixing appearance and imputation together, all the names of refutation and establishment apply, this is the supreme tenet of the overall system of valid cognition. Therefore, for things that are impossible in reality, even if there is no self-characteristic of the object to be examined, the name of non-reality can be established on the appearing object that is clung to as if it exists, so one can know that it does not exist in reality. Second, examining whether it establishes reality or name. If this is a reason for establishing reality, then the meaning of non-self-nature is merely negating the self-nature to be negated, because after negation, no other dharma is added, if only this is used to establish, then the basis to be established, the subject, will not be found, like a flower in the sky. In this way, dharma and subject will become non-different. If this is used to establish name
