Attachment gradually ceases, and by becoming accustomed to thinking that nothing exists, that too will be severed from the outside. When and what does not exist, when the object of investigation is not found, at that time, the unreal is without support, how can it remain before the mind? When both the real and the unreal do not remain before the mind, at that time, there is no other aspect, and it is completely pacified without an object of focus. As it is said, one should understand. Then, since there is no other object of thought besides the four extremes, if all four extremes are negated, and nothing is taken to mind, what is the difference between this and the doctrine of the Heshang? The Heshangs and others do not take things to mind because all attachment to reality is negated and they do not see any characteristics of the object of focus. Rather, they merely block all movements of thought in the mind. How could they eliminate all extremes? There is no reason to eliminate the extreme of existence either. Non-conceptualization is not like that. As it says in the Dharmata-Vibhanga: 'Non-attention is true transcendence, near peace and the meaning of essence, manifest signs holding five aspects, is the characteristic of abandonment.' One should understand as it is taught in the scriptures in a way that is not mixed with the five types of non-attention of the world. If one analyzes non-existence with reason and meditates along with the clinging, although it can be an antidote to the clinging to existence, it is not the wisdom that realizes freedom from elaboration and emptiness, because the focus on non-existence has not been abandoned. Some say that if one clings to the negation of inherent existence, it is nihilism. But in reality, it is called nihilism to slander cause and effect while still having attachment to reality, so how could this be nihilism? Because this is a way of clinging that is consistent with the antidote to the clinging to real existence, it is also an object of meditation for beginners, just like impermanence and impurity. But if it is compared to the great Madhyamaka non-conceptual wisdom that is free from all views and commitments, it is very inferior, because it is a view of non-existence that has the nature of conceptualization. Even for a beginner, it is possible for a mere negation of what is to be negated to appear in the mind, but for a person who has penetrated the key points through the analysis of Madhyamaka, through clearly distinguishing the difference between no self-nature and mere non-existence, the way of clinging to a special certainty that no self-nature and dependent arising are inseparable in meaning, like a cliff, can sever the two extremes of permanence and annihilation.

Although it is the antidote to clinging, as long as there is clinging with acceptance and rejection, it is not the nature of being free from the four extremes of elaboration. Without abiding in any of the four extremes, abiding in the realm of reality led by the certainty that reason has thoroughly cut through, in the manner of individual self-awareness, one can eliminate all extremes of elaboration. From this, one will have faith in the authentic extreme that cuts off imputation and has no reduction, and the authentic meaning of non-mentation spoken of in the Mother (Prajnaparamita Sutra). Thus, when it comes to the ultimate state of abiding in the realm of equanimity, since there is no object of the four extremes and it is not an object of words and thoughts, one does not make any promises. However, not making promises while still having an object is a deceitful view. Although the mere act of not making promises is similar, there is a difference between truth and falsehood in reality, just as a thief does not admit to stealing, and a non-thief does not admit to stealing. Furthermore, in order to enter the realm of equanimity—the inexpressible meaning—subsequent certainty designates speech as verbal terms, and when expressing in the manner of establishing with names such as unborn, without self-nature, emptiness, free from elaboration, without object, free from extremes, etc., these words are used in a way that necessarily grasps their own meaning. Therefore, contrary to this, because one never speaks, there is no choice but to show it as if one has made a promise in that meaning, and the mind also thinks in this way. But in reality, these words are taught for the sake of eliminating all objects of promise and object. For example, just as saying "I have no promise," and "The wisdom of the Buddha is not an object of thought and expression," these words of promise are spoken for the sake of preventing the existence of promise and being an object of thought and expression. Even so, just as when pointing at the moon with a finger, one does not look at the moon but looks at the finger, the ignorant cling to words, thinking that because they promised no promise, thought the unthinkable, and spoke the unspeakable, they understand in a contradictory way, like outsiders admitting that inference is not valid cognition, which is a great mistake.
