Because of this reason, the mind, being controlled by afflictions, enters the realm of existence, and even the hand of the Tathagata cannot prevent it. If one gains control over one's own mind, one gains control over all dharmas. It does not depend on pleasing external Ishvaras, etc., or escaping from bad circumstances to good ones, etc., on other causes. After gaining patience, not falling into the lower realms, etc., these are the qualities of the path and the fruit that appear. Otherwise, if it is not by the power of one's own mind, but by the power of external objects, then various good and bad things will constantly appear without ceasing. For a person who practices the path, it is impossible to completely abandon suffering, etc., caused by external forces. Therefore, knowing that appearances are mind, one gains a very firm conviction about entering and leaving samsara. Therefore, establishing all dharmas on one's own mind is the supreme characteristic of the Buddhas' tenets, the reality of how things appear, the essential point of the instructions for meditation, like a carpenter who is skilled in the essential points of wood, it is the life force that cuts through the wheel of illusion of existence. If one grasps the special means, then ultimately in the Vajrayana stage, this is the essence of the instructions. Nowadays, those who have not found the root of Dharma through experience, but only carry words on their mouths, think that the Dharma of merely distinguishing in the mind is insignificant. They think that they should practice the path through greater logic and wider explanations than that. However, although it is necessary to determine the scope of listening and thinking, it is also necessary to condense the essence of practice. The holy ones who have attained the Dharma see that, in the Prajnaparamita Sutra, it says: "Abandoning the root and seeking the branches, finding the best food and seeking inferior food, finding the elephant and seeking the elephant's footprints, not begging from the lord who gives abundant wealth, but begging from the servant who gives little wealth." Like this, abandoning the root of the Dharma, merely being satisfied with experiencing the accumulation of words, and arrogantly despising others who have essential points, these people have reversed the greatness and smallness of the Dharma. Therefore, all appearances are self-

This appearing and knowing, whether it is Sutra or Tantra, as long as one is pursuing the path, one should have deep faith in it, and there is nothing more important than this. Even in the various appearances in a dream of one night, if one tries to eliminate them by other means, it is inexhaustible. But if one understands that these arise from one's own mind, then all of them will immediately and naturally subside. Similarly, the appearances of samsara, no matter how long the time or how vast the space, should be understood to be the same as this. Fourth, dividing the ultimate truth into two types, nominal and non-nominal, is an excellent and supreme tradition. If one does not initially point out that everything is without inherent existence, there is no way to destroy the inverted clinging to reality that has been habitual since beginningless time. If one only points out that these are the ultimate truth, then some with small minds will think that merely negating the object of negation is the reality, and thus cling to emptiness, forming an incorrigible view. Moreover, there are two ways of clinging: clinging to emptiness as something real, and clinging to emptiness as something unreal. If one says that one should not cling to any side, then one will lose the antidote to all the diseases of samsara—the definitive understanding derived from the source of the nectar of profound emptiness, guided by the wisdom of reason. If one thinks that one should not think of anything and falls into the darkness of unconsciousness, then it is difficult for such a person to observe, see, understand, and experience this profound Dharma. As it is said in the Madhyamaka Shastra: "If one views emptiness incorrectly, those with little wisdom will be destroyed, just as a snake is grasped incorrectly, and a mantra is performed improperly." Therefore, you should know that because the weak find it difficult to understand the profundity of this Dharma, the Buddha's mind completely turned away from teaching it. Therefore, first, destroy the clinging to reality with the ultimate truth that is merely nominal, and then proclaim the ultimate truth that is non-nominal, so that the clinging to unreality can also be prevented. In short, for the four extremes of existence, non-existence, both, and neither, without adding any distinctions such as true establishment, but by destroying the clinging to them, one can easily recognize the profound meaning of the great freedom from elaboration that is personally realized. These principles are stated by Shantideva: "By familiarizing oneself with emptiness, one gradually abandons the mind of reality."
