Furthermore, some say: To establish that Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not have self of phenomena, the most important and outstanding of all reasonings is: Grasping at truth is pervaded by ignorance, and that ignorance is the afflicted ignorance that is the first of the twelve links of dependent origination. That's what they say. Although grasping at truth is pervaded by ignorance, how can it be established that if it is grasping at truth, it is necessarily the afflicted ignorance that is the first of the twelve links of dependent origination? It cannot be established! Some say that from the root and commentaries of the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness and the Four Hundred Stanzas, as well as the commentary on Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds, etc., they quote the scriptural statements that "when the ignorance that particularly imputes to things ceases, cyclic existence will cease," and therefore, grasping at truth is afflicted. Whatever such scriptural statement there may be, the statement that if ignorance ceases, cyclic existence ceases is a general statement. If there is no ignorance, why would cyclic existence not cease? From ignorance imputing to things, to the establishment of cyclic existence in the manner of the twelve links of dependent origination, it is well-known from the general scriptures, and everyone admits it. The way of particularly imputing to things, there are two types: imputing to a person and imputing to phenomena. The first is afflicted ignorance, which is the beginning of the twelve links of dependent origination, and it generates all other afflictive obscurations. The latter is non-afflicted ignorance, which is the root of the obscuration to knowledge. Although both of these ignorances can be generally called afflictions, the afflictions that are distinguished by the pair of afflictions and knowledge do not apply to non-afflicted ignorance, etc. Such limitless ways can be applied not only in this situation but in all situations. So how can such scriptural statements establish that whatever is ignorance is the root of cyclic existence? If grasping at truth is pervaded by afflicted ignorance, and its habit is the obscuration to knowledge, then even the arhats have not eradicated from the root the subtle seed of afflictions, the habit of afflictions, which causes rebirth in cyclic existence. Furthermore, the answer to the various analyses of the wise, such as whether or not there are things to be abandoned in the inferior path that precedes, should also be answered, but one cannot establish one's own position merely with words that have no reason. From the Twenty Thousand Verses, Shariputra asked, even if the Four Noble Truths are meditated on as empty, the bodhisattva's

When asked how the wisdom cultivated in one day surpasses the wisdom of a Shravaka, the Buddha said: Is it because it is or is not embraced by Bodhicitta? Because the answer was not given from the perspective of whether or not the realization of selflessness is complete. The questioner said that from the way the question was asked and the way the Buddha answered, one can realize selflessness. It has also been said during practice that there will be differences depending on whether or not it is embraced by Bodhicitta. In the context of the Root Knowledge Sutra of the Abridged Mother, it is also said that cultivating the Prajnaparamita of a Bodhisattva is most excellent from the perspective of the realization of the equality of Samsara and Nirvana. If there is no difference in realization, then it would be unreasonable to say that. Also, when explaining the Mahayana Sutras, if Shariputra and others ask questions and explain, if they do not realize it, then it is irrelevant to infer that they are not beings to be tamed for this purpose. Not only emptiness, but also all the paths of the Mahayana, such as conventional Bodhicitta, have they not heard of them? If they have heard of them, do you admit that they are beings to be tamed for this purpose? Furthermore, the deeds of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas cannot be measured with narrow-mindedness. As the sutra says: The Shravaka disciples of the Buddhas also teach the Dharma in due measure, etc. Even if Mara Papiyas sits on a lion throne and preaches the Mahayana Sutra in order to abandon the deeds of Mara, etc., if these situations exist, why is it necessary to assert that everything is like this? The Buddha said that Shariputra and others are emanated Shravakas. If others prove it with their own intentions, then thinking that this contradicts the Buddha is tantamount to criticizing the Buddha. If the five Bhikshus and others are not beings to be tamed for the sake of the Hinayana, then saying that there is no need to hold the name of a Shravaka characteristic is because one has not thought for oneself. Even within each gathering of disciples tamed by the Mahayana and Hinayana, there are: Eighty thousand Bhikshus are completely liberated from all defilements and no longer take rebirth. Ninety thousand Bhikshunis have obtained the pure Dharma eye in the Dharma. Many gods and humans have generated Bodhicitta. If it has been said like this, then it is not necessary for only the five Bhikshus and others to hold the name of the object to be tamed by the Hinayana, because the retinue
