Alala! Therefore, for the school that wishes conventional validity to be established, the two truths should be distinguished and spoken about. It should be understood that if they are not distinguished, merely contemplating them will not lead to the understanding of ultimate truth. In short, if the ultimate state of affairs, which is like the object of measurement that transcends the realm of samadhi, sound, and conceptualization, is placed in the position of being inseparable from the truth, then there is no need to distinguish the two truths. Because all phenomena that appear in this way have no affirmation or negation of existence, non-existence, being, or non-being, it is like answering with an attitude of not saying anything. In reality, since it transcends all terms, is inexpressible, free from elaboration, and is equality itself, it is established as having no commitment. However, if the post-meditative state, which has become the object of sound and conceptualization, is placed in the position of appearance, and one thinks about the classifications of the basis, path, and result, and also needs to speak to others, then it is impossible to go beyond distinguishing the two valid cognitions and engaging in the mode of affirmation and negation. If that is the case, one should not think that this and the consequentialist approach are very different. Although the way of making conventional commitments is different, it is established by reason that the ultimate intention of the great chariots is inseparable in essence. If one understands this, then here in the land of snow (Tibet), some scholars consider the conventional to be validly established, while others consider it to be an impossible evil word. Some accuse the former scholars of not understanding the true view of the consequentialists, and so on. Furthermore, much of the stain of ignorance regarding the tenets of the great chariots will be naturally liberated. That is to say, when establishing the classification of the two truths in this way, one might think: If the conventional is said to obscure or cover the true meaning, then impure phenomena are like that, but pure phenomena that are free from delusion, such as the body and wisdom of the Buddha, are not conventional, and therefore are not empty, and so on. If one thinks in this way, then, as it is said, "Attachment to kings and the like is subtle," one must abandon the clinging to reality, because if there is a dharma superior to the supreme dharma of nirvana, it should also be regarded as an illusion and a dream. One should generate certainty in accordance with the meaning of what was said. Moreover, in the sutras and treatises, there are two ways of establishing the two truths, namely, establishing the meaning of reality.

Taking the valid cognition that examines the ultimate as the standard, emptiness is established as the ultimate truth, and appearance is established as the conventional truth. Taking the valid cognition of conventional terms that examines the way things appear as the standard, the consistent appearance and abiding, the non-deceptive object and subject are established as the ultimate truth, and the opposite is established as the conventional truth. Of these two ways, the latter's ultimate truth, although it is the ultimate truth, its essence is emptiness. Here, it is like the former. Furthermore, the way of dividing the meaning of conventional truth into two, correct and incorrect, and establishing it on the incorrect is: because the so-called "correct" refers to the reality of things, that is, the emptiness that is not established by its own nature. Therefore, the so-called conventional truth must be understood as only referring to the state of appearing as birth and so on, and for children, it is like the state where emptiness is hidden and obscured. It should not be understood as deceiving and lying in every way. Nor should it be understood as always obscuring emptiness, because for the noble ones, emptiness and dependent arising illuminate each other. Therefore, merely appearing does not obscure emptiness, but due to the power of ignorance that clings to appearance as real, the nature of objects is perceived in a reversed way. Therefore, in order to reverse the wrong thoughts of the trainees, the teacher, with skillful means and great compassion, adapts to the minds of the trainees and calls appearance conventional truth, which is just a convenient term established to realize the ultimate truth. Appearance and conventional truth are the same in meaning, and although appearance appears, it must be understood as not truly established as it appears. Saying "not true" does not need to indicate that it is a reversed appearance, but it should be understood as establishing "not true" on emptiness. It is established as it appears. If it is true as it appears, then it cannot be established as conventional truth. If so, it will become non-empty, and since it is perfectly established by reason that a non-empty thing cannot exist as an object of knowledge, therefore, within the scope of knowable things, there cannot exist a phenomenon where appearance and emptiness are completely separated and become a single side. Because it does not exist in the nature of things, therefore, those who speak of reason will not even acknowledge that such a thing exists. In short, the meaning of the word "conventional truth" is only to show that what appears is emptiness, and everything else...
