It is as if one has not entered into it. By adding a negative word to the inferior, it is said that one has not realized the selflessness of phenomena, as stated in all sutras and treatises. So, what is the complete selflessness of phenomena? The term "phenomena" has ten meanings, but in this context, it refers to objects of knowledge, which include all things, such as objects and non-objects, conditioned and unconditioned phenomena, and so on. If one knows that all of these are empty, then that is the complete selflessness of phenomena. As stated in the Engaging in the Bodhisattva's Deeds, "Emptiness with elaboration, after explaining sixteen, is summarized. Again, explaining four, those are also accepted in the Great Vehicle." This shows that it is the path of the Great Vehicle. Now, one might wonder why, if Hearers and Solitary Realizers know the emptiness of one phenomenon, they do not know that all are empty. This is because, in reality, the nature of all phenomena abides in emptiness, but knowing one to be empty does not necessarily mean that one will see all as such. This is because they cling to the selflessness of persons alone and do not seek the meaning of the selflessness of phenomena, and because they lack the conditions of internal and external support, conduct, and dedication, their realization is slow. Even those who uphold the scriptures and reasoning of the Great Vehicle, it depends on whether their intellectual capacity fully ascertains the completeness of the selflessness of phenomena, and whether they can cultivate freedom from elaboration as it is during meditation. When it is said that whoever sees the suchness of one thing sees the suchness of all things, it refers to the individual who can see that the non-fleeting, equal nature abides equally in all things. Furthermore, if everyone who knows one phenomenon to be empty must immediately know all phenomena to be empty, then the wisdom that realizes the emptiness of external atoms must also ascertain that all phenomena are empty. If that were the case, all the extensive reasoning of the Madhyamaka school would become meaningless. Therefore, even the noble beings of the Great Vehicle who truly seek the selflessness of phenomena and are supported by internal and external support cannot directly see countless ones, let alone the Hearers and Solitary Realizers who are the opposite of that. If one asserts that seeing the emptiness of one phenomenon means seeing the emptiness of all phenomena, then all four philosophical schools would become merely Madhyamaka, and if that were the case, it would be too easy.

Moreover, even the Shravaka-pratyekabuddha Arhats eventually need to realize that, at the end of ten thousand kalpas, they are urged by the power of the Buddha from the realm of cessation to enter the Mahayana. The so-called "absence of self of phenomena" refers to realizing that all phenomena are without self, and not just realizing any one of them; this does not perfect the absence of self of phenomena. Therefore, both existence and non-existence, or truth and non-truth, are objects that can be cognized by the mind as phenomena. Therefore, having realized that all phenomena are without inherent existence, and thus attained the state of complete sixteenfold emptiness, free from all extremes of clinging to objects, that state of noble meditative wisdom is called the absence of self of phenomena. This is an emptiness that transcends both existence and non-existence, a non-elaborate equality. If one merely negates the truth of things, but still relies on the non-true thing itself as a support for the mind, and cannot transcend it, then it is merely an emptiness that becomes an object of discrimination, refutation, and speculation. Therefore, although the Shravakas thoroughly realize the emptiness of the self of persons, if such a limited wisdom is compared to the Mahayana's meditative wisdom that is free from all extremes, it is said that there is a difference like that between the ocean and the water in a cow's hoofprint, or between the sky and the space inside a mustard seed eaten by a worm. It is precisely because there is such a difference in wisdom that the paths also become higher and lower. If there is no difference in realization, then it is unreasonable to have a difference in abandonment. If the following and diverging of abandonment and realization are not consistent, then there will be no valid proof to establish that the object to be abandoned and the wisdom of the antidote are contradictory. If that is the case, then the establishment of the path and the establishment of the fruit will also be impossible to prove with correct reasoning, which in effect becomes a great slander, and is therefore difficult to accept in any way. Therefore, it is not reasonable to realize that the object to be abandoned is obscured but is realized as if it were not obscured, or that the object to be abandoned is not obscured but is not realized as if it were obscured. This is like admitting that the sun has risen but it is still dark, or that the sun has risen but objects are not visible, which is not appropriate for those who speak of reason. Then, why is it that the sutras say that the wisdom of the Arhats is not overcome by the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas on the first bhumi, and this is taken as evidence that the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas have realized emptiness? This is because the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas
