In short, besides these two, there is no mention of a third obscuration. Even the extremely subtle obscurations of habit obstruct the manifestation of the nature of knowable things as they are, so they are not beyond the obscuration of knowledge. So, what obstructs liberation? The afflictions such as clinging to self and what belongs to self obstruct liberation. What obstructs knowing all phenomena? Ignorance that does not manifest the nature of all phenomena obstructs knowing all phenomena. Regarding the difference between the two obscurations of affliction and knowledge, various distinctions such as cause, essence, function, etc., appear in various treatises, but in essence, the key point is the same. If the essential meaning is summarized, it is like this: The main cause of wandering in samsara is the afflictions such as attachment. And the indispensable root of these is said to be innate view of the perishable, and it is also established by reasoning. All afflictions that have the root of clinging to the self of a person are afflictive obscurations. Not knowing all phenomena of suchness and all phenomena as they are is because of the ignorance that is ignorant of the nature of all phenomena. Therefore, all gross and subtle ignorance that has the root of clinging to the self of phenomena is the obscuration of knowledge. If there is a deep understanding of this and it is combined with the practice of the path, then whatever is the opposite of the six perfections, such as stinginess, which arises from clinging to self, if it exists, one will not enter the respective antidotal perfections, this is the afflictive obscuration. Even if one enters, if one does not realize the selflessness of phenomena, the true differentiation in the three spheres that has the root of clinging to the self of phenomena is the obscuration of knowledge. As it is said in the Uttaratantra: "Whatever is the differentiation of the three spheres, that is established as the obscuration of knowledge, the differentiation of stinginess, etc., that is established as the afflictive obscuration." Thus it is said. Therefore, if one realizes the selflessness of a person, all afflictions that have the root of clinging to self will cease, which is established by reasoning. If one sees selflessness, it is impossible to have attachment, hatred, pride, etc. due to clinging, and if there is clinging to self, these will also necessarily exist. As it is said in the Ratnavali: "As long as one clings to the aggregates,

It is said (in verse): As long as there is self-grasping, there will be karma. From karma, there will be rebirth. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: If there is a self, then others are known. From the division of self and others, attachment and hatred arise. From these and all related things, all faults will arise. Therefore, if there is manifest attachment to self, then that will lead to samsara. As it is said in Engaging in the Middle Way: All afflictions and faults arise from the view of the aggregates of destruction, as seen by the wise. And so on. Such self-grasping is abandoned by the wisdom that realizes the antidote of selflessness. This also directly sees the true nature of reality on the path of seeing, abandoning all distorted imputations on the true meaning. Thereafter, on the path of meditation, the innate is abandoned. The key points of understanding these two, imputation and innate, should be known elsewhere. Therefore, the Hearers and Solitary Realizers, by meditating solely on the selflessness of the individual, which is the antidote to the afflictive obscurations, can exhaust all afflictions, like a fire that goes out when the fuel is exhausted. Since there is no cause for existence, it is never possible to return to samsara. However, since the meditation on the selflessness of phenomena is not complete, it will not be possible to abandon the obscurations to knowledge. In general, all ignorance that obscures the nature of knowable things can be referred to by the name of afflictions. However, when distinguishing between the two, afflictions and knowledge, it is always important to distinguish between non-afflictions and so on, as appropriate. The Great Vehicle Noble Ones, from the path of seeing onwards, abandon both afflictive and cognitive obscurations simultaneously. In the case of the eighth ground, by effortlessly entering into the nature of phenomena, even the subtle seeds of self-grasping are exhausted, so all afflictions are exhausted, and thereafter, in the three pure grounds, only the habitual tendencies of dualistic appearance, or only the cognitive obscurations, are abandoned. However, even a subtle obscuration can obstruct the sphere of phenomena, so equality is only possible for the Buddhas, not for those in training. As it is said in Engaging in the Middle Way: Since undefiled wisdom does not coexist with faults, those stains are completely pacified with their roots on the eighth ground. Although afflictions are exhausted and one has become the supreme of the three realms, the qualities of the Buddhas, which are limitless like the sky, cannot be fully attained.
