It is possible. The characteristics of the ālaya-vijñāna are threefold: establishing its own nature, establishing it as a cause, and establishing it as a result. First, because it relies on the habits of all afflictive dharmas and has the inability to fully hold seeds, it is the cause for the arising of other dharmas. Second, it has the power to generate all dharmas, because it is all seeds, therefore it always abides as the cause of all afflictions. Third, from beginningless time, the ālaya has arisen relying on the habits of all afflictions. What is a habit? What is the meaning of this name? For any dharma, whatever is the reason for its arising later, due to its arising and ceasing together with it, that is the meaning of this name. For example, sesame seeds perfumed with flowers, the sesame and the flower arise and cease together, but the sesame becomes the reason for the arising of the fragrance of that flower. Also, the habits of desire, etc., of actions such as desire, etc., desire, etc., and the mind arise and cease together, but the mind becomes the cause of that desire, etc. Also, the habit of much learning of those who have much learning, that hearing and attention arise and cease together, but the mind becomes the reason for expressing it. Just as being seized by habit is called dharma-grasping, so too, the ālaya-vijñāna should be viewed in this way, seeing that there are various realms of habits. Are the seeds that exist in the ālaya-vijñāna different or not different? Just as the power of the seed to generate the shape of sprouts, etc., is not different from the seed, but is not the same as the power of the seed, so too, they are neither substantially different nor not different. Whatever dharma has the particularity of the power to generate it, the ālaya-vijñāna arises like a fruit, this is called all seeds. How should we view the ālaya-vijñāna and all afflictive dharmas as simultaneously becoming the cause of one? For example, the arising of a lamp flame and the burning of the wick are simultaneous, and like the pillars of a house are also simultaneous, relying on each other and not collapsing. This explains that two dharmas exist simultaneously and are the cause of arising together.

Ultimately, it is indeed feasible. 7. Just as the ālaya-vijñāna is the cause of all kleśa-dharmas, so too, all kleśa-dharmas are regarded as the causal condition of the ālaya-vijñāna. Since they become causes for each other, no other causal condition is discerned. 7. If the latent impressions (vāsanā) are not distinct and not diverse, how can they be the cause of distinct and diverse dharmas? For example, cloth dyed with various kinds of madder does not appear to be diverse. Garments woven with various kinds of threads do not appear to be diverse. However, when it is placed in a vessel of dye, the distinctions of the various colors appear on the cloth. Similarly, when latent impressions are imprinted on the ālaya-vijñāna, although various things mature when the latent impressions are present, when it encounters the conditions for the manifestation of the fruit and appears in the vessel of dye, it reveals countless things. This, in the Mahāyāna, is the pratītyasamutpāda (dependent origination) that is difficult for ordinary beings to understand, subtle, and difficult even for arhats to understand, and is the most profound of all. In short, there are two types of dependent origination: that which distinguishes the nature of things, and that which distinguishes suffering and non-suffering. The first is the arising of dharmas in dependence on the ālaya-vijñāna, because the very nature of the ālaya becomes the object that distinguishes various dharmas. That is, the meaning is subtle and difficult to understand. The second is the twelve links of dependent origination, because the various distinctions of suffering and non-suffering in the good and bad destinies become objects due to various conditions, which is coarse and easy to understand. Some, being ignorant of the meaning of the first type of dependent origination, think that dharmas arise from the cause of the nature of a primary principle. Some hold that they arise from previous causes. Similarly, they think that they are emanated by Īśvara, or that the self of a person arises from a cause, or annihilationists think that they arise without a cause or condition. Being ignorant of the second type of dependent origination, they think of the self as the agent and the enjoyer of the fruit. For example, many blind people who have not seen an elephant, touch the elephant's trunk and say that the elephant is like a plow handle. Touching the tusk, they think it is like a pestle. Touching the ear
