It is called "Alaya-vijñana," and it is also indicated by names such as "the aggregates as long as samsara exists" from the scriptures of the Sa-ston school. Sometimes, in a state of mindlessness, such as form, formlessness, and non-perception, the continuity of consciousness seems to be interrupted, but because the continuity of Alaya-vijñana is constant, the seeds of these consciousnesses are not interrupted. Alaya-vijñana, mind, root consciousness, grasping consciousness, the aggregates as long as samsara exists, and the limb of existence are said to be the first to create the great path of Alaya-vijñana. Some Shravakas think that mind, intellect, and consciousness are different words but have the same meaning, which is unreasonable. Just as the objects of intellect and consciousness are different, mind also has different meanings, so these three should be distinguished. The "Alaya" mentioned above refers to calling the five aggregates of grasping as Alaya, or thinking of calling pleasurable feelings accompanied by desire and the view of the perishable aggregate as Alaya. According to the Shravaka vehicle, there is nothing wrong with establishing it in this way. However, if one does not understand the true meaning of Alaya and understands the meaning of the scriptures in this way, then for those who are not deluded, clinging to Alaya-vijñana is the best. Because the five aggregates of grasping are incompatible with beings born in extremely painful evil realms, they do not want to have the five aggregates of grasping, and they should not like or cling to them, because they want to be separated from the five aggregates of grasping. Pleasurable feelings accompanied by desire do not exist above the fourth dhyana, and they are incompatible with sentient beings who have pleasurable feelings, so they should not cling to them either. The view of the perishable aggregate is also incompatible with Buddhists who believe in no-self, so they should not cling to it either. To regard Alaya-vijñana as the basis for applying the name of the inner "self" is because those extremely painful evil beings, although they want the aggregates of suffering to be liberated, they do not want Alaya-vijñana to be liberated because they are bound by the "self" clinging to Alaya-vijñana. There is no happiness above the fourth dhyana, but the "self" clinging to Alaya-mind is still connected. Even if Buddhists do not agree with the view of self, the "self" clinging to the mind Alaya-vijñana is still connected, and the mere existence of this cannot be denied.
