Verses. The subtle emanations of the Buddha, In order to manifest complete perfect enlightenment in every way, To teach in all worlds, Therefore, so many enter the womb. Having made aspirations for the benefit of all sentient beings, And by accomplishing that meaning, truly accomplishing great enlightenment, It is not permissible to completely pass into nirvana forever, Because making aspirations and accomplishing would become meaningless. Because the enjoyment body and the emanation body are impermanent. How is it said that the bodies of the Thus-Gone Ones are permanent? It is said that the enjoyment body and the emanation body, which have a common cause, rely on the Dharma body. The enjoyment body is continuous and the emanation is shown again and again, so it should be known as permanent. For example, the enjoyment body is said to always enjoy happiness in the world, etc., although it is not only happiness, but it is spoken of in terms of continuity. The example of the emanation body is that it is said to always give food, which does not mean that there is no giving for even a moment, but it means that there is no one who does not give, so it is always given, as it is intended to be easily obtained. For six reasons, the Buddhas do not always remain in the emanation body, that is, in that body, because they liberate the sentient beings who are to be fully ripened, and because their work is complete. And because they desire the Buddha's body to be permanent, they prevent the desire for nirvana, and although they ask for its meaning, they do not understand it themselves, and because they do not understand the profound Dharma that is taught, they say that the Buddha has not taught it well, and they prevent contempt for the Buddha, and if they see it constantly, they despise it, so after it has passed away, they know it is rare, and they generate joy in the Buddha, and because they do not see the teacher, or because they have not seen him, they should cause each of the trainees to generate diligence, and because they do not abandon their own diligence, they should be fully ripened quickly. That meaning is expressed here in verses: Because the accomplishment of the work is complete, In order to prevent the postponement of not wanting to quickly enter into peace, This is easy to obtain and see, etc., in order to prevent contempt for the Buddha, Because the appearance of the Buddha is rare, in order to generate joy in the Buddha, Each of

Therefore, in order to initiate diligence, and in order for that virtuous diligence to quickly reach perfection, the Buddhas do not wish to remain permanently in the form of emanation bodies. Although the Dharmakaya of the Buddhas has existed immeasurably since beginningless time, one should not therefore be lazy. Here is a verse: If there is no difference in attaining Buddhahood, and it is countless, then beings will become lazy because of this, that is, they will abandon diligence. What was previously attained will become eternally without cause, or, if that is unreasonable, if there is a cause, then just as they attained it, one would also cut off the continuity of the cause for oneself, which is not reasonable. If it is said that because there have been countless Buddhas who have attained Dharmakaya since beginningless time, any one of them can accomplish the benefit of all sentient beings, so now there is no need to strive to attain it for the benefit of sentient beings. Why shouldn't one strive in that way? Because in that case, all faults would arise for the Buddha who has existed since beginningless time, or everything would not be attained without cause. Even if it is attained through an uninterrupted continuity of cause, how can one cut off the continuity of cause when there is clearly a cause now? The great bliss of the Buddha that one has attained will not become smaller because there are many Buddhas. The result of one's own aspiration will not become smaller because there are many Buddhas, because even if a thousand Buddhas appear later, it is the activity of the previous Buddhas. Therefore, it is unreasonable to be lazy in regard to the cause. Furthermore, Bodhisattvas who are subdued by compassion have love for all sentient beings as if they were their only child. Therefore, even if the benefit of sentient beings is accomplished by others, or not accomplished, one should not say that I will not do it. Just as a mother removes the suffering of her child and accomplishes happiness, one should not be lazy in regard to the activity of the Buddha. The Summary of the Great Vehicle, composed by the great scholar Arya Asanga, is complete. Translated by Pandit Jinamitra, Shīlendrabodhi, and the monk Yeshe De. The treatise of the Great Vehicle is as vast as the ocean, and those who are weak in wisdom and diligence have little confidence to enter it. In order to familiarize my own mind, I have made some deletions in the text, but I have fully explained all the meanings. May it be auspicious!

Completed. In the Iron Pig year of the Rabjung cycle, on an auspicious day of the month, it was composed by Mipham. Auspicious! Mangalam! This commentary also corresponds with Vasubandhu's commentary and the two compilations of "Summary of the Differentiation of the Meaning's Secrets." Primarily, it accords with the early translations of the commentary composed by the Venerable Non-inherent Nature (Nihsvabhavavadin), translated by translators such as Yeshe De, and it was copied in Dzogchen Monastery without any alterations from the handwritten manuscript of the Omniscient Mipham Chökyi Lodrö. By this, may I and all other beings in all lives become vessels of the profound, vast, and unsurpassed Mahayana Dharma, and may we manifest omniscient wisdom! Mangalam, auspicious!
