They meditate on the ten grounds, and further on for three countless kalpas. Having thus perfected the three trainings, they attain the fruit of Nirvana, and awaken to supreme perfect Bodhi, obtaining the omniscient wisdom. It is said that this completes all the paths of the Great Vehicle. First, the practice of establishing the Alaya-consciousness. The Sutra of Manifestation states: The realm or cause of beginningless time is the source of all phenomena of samsara. Because this realm exists, there are all beings of the three realms, and by abandoning it, Nirvana can be attained. It is not a place of purification, and although it is not included in the Alaya, it is merely a support. Thus it is said. The seeds of all dharmas, all consciousnesses, are the Alaya. Therefore, the Alaya-consciousness, I declare to the noble Bodhisattvas. Thus it is said. Why is it called Alaya-consciousness? Because in the dharma of birth, all afflictions and their resultant objects are combined with it, or the Alaya-consciousness is also combined with the objects of their causes. Or because it combines various sentient beings with the nature of the Alaya-consciousness. The Explanation of Intent states that the classes of sentient beings of the six realms, the collection of the four births, when their bodies are formed in the place of birth, first rely on the sense organs with form and support, and rely on the habits of conceptual proliferation that impose names and signs from names and characteristics, thereby maturing, entering, growing, increasing, and expanding the mind of all seeds. Thus it is said. This is called the taking-consciousness. As the Explanation of Intent says: The taking-consciousness is not understood by worldly people, it is profound and subtle for the Shravakas to contemplate. The seeds of all three contaminations flow like a stream, constantly continuing until the Vajra Samadhi is generated. If it is shown, it should not be mistaken as self. This I have not declared to children. Thus it is said. Why is it called the taking-consciousness? Because it is the cause of all sense organs with form, and because it has become the place where embodied beings closely take hold. Thus, as long as life lasts from birth to death, following until the end, that sense organ with form

If the five are not destroyed, it is because of clinging; if there is no clinging, it will decay like a corpse, and the alaya-consciousness will become the place for taking all bodies. Thus, in connecting the continuity of previous and subsequent lives, it is also the alaya-consciousness that causes the subsequent body to manifest and be accomplished, because the alaya-consciousness has the seeds of all bodies, so it clings to the body in order to hold it. The alaya-consciousness is called mind because it accumulates all kinds of habitual tendencies of dharmas. There are two kinds of mind: the mind of the consciousness that has just ceased, which is the place where consciousness arises as an immediate cause. And the afflicted mind, which is the ego-grasping that possesses the four attributes of habitual tendencies, etc. It is the place where consciousness is completely afflicted. Entering consciousness is consciousness for distinguishing the respective objects such as form. Therefore, the Bhagavan said mind, intellect, and consciousness. If there is no afflicted mind, there will be the fault that ignorance, attachment, and other afflictions will not be mixed with other afflictions. And the five, such as eye consciousness, will also become dissimilar or unlike the Dharma, because the eye consciousness and others have their respective supports, such as the eyes. But the mind relies on the afflicted mind, and if there is no afflicted mind, it will become different from the five and become without support. This is explained as follows: the eyes and so on are the supports of the five aggregates of consciousness, changing together with themselves. If the definition of being called mind because of ego-grasping is missing, there will also be a fault, because the immediate mind has ceased, so it is not said that way. The unconscious state and the cessation attainment will become indistinguishable, because in the former, although other consciousnesses have ceased, there is still afflicted mind, while in the cessation attainment, the afflicted mind has ceased and is absent. If there is no afflicted mind in the unconscious state, then when another birth first arises there, it will not become an afflicted being, because if there is no ego-grasping, ego-grasping will arise without a cause for ego-grasping. Even if it is assumed that ego-grasping arises at all times in all minds of virtue, non-virtue, and neutral. Otherwise, if there is no ego-grasping, ego-grasping can only be associated with non-virtuous minds, but it cannot be associated with virtue and neutral. But this is not the case, because giving, etc.
