It is for the sake of perfect accomplishment. Is whatever is giving also a pāramitā? Is whatever is a pāramitā also giving? If asked thus, there is giving but it is not a pāramitā, there are four possibilities. Giving is, but is not a pāramitā, it is separated from the six perfections. A pāramitā is, but is not giving, it is the discipline etc. that possesses the six perfections. Both are, it is giving that possesses the six perfections. Neither is, it is discipline etc. that is separated from the six perfections. Therefore, for things like rhinoceros horns, there is not even the name of the six pāramitās. The only Bhagavan is a pāramitā, residing in the commonality of the six. Thus it is said. Like giving, the remaining pāramitās should also be viewed in terms of the four possibilities as appropriate. Why is this order of these pāramitās taught in this way? It is because the former gradually corresponds to the arising of the latter. If one is not attached to enjoyment, one can keep discipline. If one has discipline, one can endure. If one endures, one will not be disturbed by disharmony. If one is not disturbed, one will initiate diligence. If one initiates diligence, one will equally settle the mind. If one settles the mind equally, one will thoroughly know as it is. How should one view the etymology of these? Because they excel all the virtues such as giving of worldly beings and hearers and self-realizers and go to the other shore, they are the pāramitās. In the cause phase, it destroys miserliness and the poverty of the result, and in the result phase, it causes the attainment of great enjoyment and the accumulation of merit, therefore it is giving. In the cause phase, it pacifies immoral conduct and the evil destinies of the result, and in the result phase, it causes the attainment of happy destinies and samādhi, therefore it is discipline. It makes anger and hatred cease in the cause phase, and in the result phase, it makes oneself and others happy, therefore it is patience. In the cause phase, it separates one from laziness and sinful non-virtuous dharmas, and in the result phase, it makes limitless virtuous dharmas increase and perfect, therefore it is diligence. In the cause phase, it eliminates distraction, and it accomplishes the abiding of the mind within, therefore it is meditation. It eliminates all wrong views and corrupt wisdom such as the view of self, and in all ways it thoroughly knows the dharmas correctly, therefore it is wisdom. How should one view the meditation of repeatedly familiarizing oneself with these pāramitās?
