Those are the monks and Brahmins who are skilled in the words and meanings of the Dharma. The basis of speech is: what is to be established and the establishment. What is to be established is whether the nature of self and Dharma exists or not, and its difference is whether it is completely existent or not completely existent, and the differences such as permanent and impermanent, with form and without form, etc. The establishment is: first, the meaning of the vow, showing what is to be established, which is the vow; second, the reason for establishing it; third, its example; fourth, the close combination of the similarities between the example and what has the example; fifth, like this, summarizing everything and ending with a conclusion that completes the sacred meaning. That reason is direct perception, inference, and trustworthy words. Establishing the nature is: the nature of self and the nature of Dharma. The difference is: the difference of self and the difference of Dharma. Vowing is: in order to establish what I desire, showing this to the opponent so that he understands. The reason is: for that which is to be established itself, previously unknown, that is, in the state of not being established, the cause that newly generates trust is what is visibly apparent, such as the sign of establishment, the result, the nature, etc., and stating it through the sign of negating the non-apparent. The example is: combining and stating the known part (i.e., the seen part) and the unknown part (i.e., the unseen part) similarly, that is, explaining. Close combination is: just as the meaning of what is to be established is established by the previous three limbs, in the same way, for the remaining Dharma that is similar to its kind, combining the three Dharmas of its establishing meaning in the manner of similarity, similarly stating and showing the same. The conclusion is: because it has been well established by reason, it is reasonable, therefore it is like that, thus stating it in a final and complete manner. For example, vowing "no self," the reason is "because the aggregates are not observed as one or different," just as now attaching the past to the present, through that, just as there is no self, permanence, etc., also do not exist, this is close combination. Because it is not like that, therefore, from the impermanence of the five aggregates to no self, this is the conclusion. Direct perception is: one's own object, such as the eye, form, etc., exists and appears without obscuration, and there is no cause for confusion, therefore it is without error. Inference is: not the remainder of direct perception, making one believe in the hidden.
